Spotting. Again.

I had an episode where I had some light pink spotting at 27ish weeks and it freaked me out. My Doctor found nothing wrong, after a U/S and an exam. He said it 'can be' common in the third tri and it is not anything to worry about since my cervix was closed and everything checked out OK with the baby and baby's placenta. He said my cervix may be irritated, but that was just his guess.

Well, it happened again this morning. Light pink spotting when I wiped, maybe the first 2 or 3 times I used the bathroom. Then it subsided. I have a DR appointment for a sizing U/S monday and will definitely mention it to him first thing. Baby seems active as usual. Anyone have experience with spotting in the 3rd Tri? How common is this and what are some of the possible causes?

  • First, when in doubt call your OB. That said, have you had a recent cervical exam or intercourse? Those can cause light bleeding.
No, I haven't had either, and it was the same way last time. He had mentioned to me that having sex is usually the cause. But in this case... nada.

  • I haven't had any bleeding myself, but I know that bleeding/spotting is on the list of things to call about with my OB should it happen.

I think you should definitely ring your OB and let them know.

I've had several episodes of spotting in the third trimester during this pregnancy, and none of them were associated with sex. I called my OB the first time it happened, and they sent me in for an ultrasound. Everything looked fine, though. Since then, I've noticed that the spotting only happens when I'm at work --- I'm a nurse, and my particular position involves a lot of twisting, turning, lifting, and standing. I just mention it at drs apps to make sure they can make note of it, but in the absence of other symptoms, I'm not worried at all.
  • No advice on what could be causing other than what was mentioned or possible placenta previa, but I hope it is nothing.

  • My packet says that at any time in third tri "DANGER sign", any bleeding/spotting, period is an immediate phone call. Do not wait until Monday.

  • Your Dr already answered your exact questions. If you have more, or would like for him to repeat his answer slowly, so that you can understand it, you can always call for reassurance. Yes, mild pink spotting can be normal for some women, not every woman will experience it though. You should be concerned if it turns into more blood than discharge and is no longer pink, but red. Again, your Dr is the best one to advise you on what is happening with your body right now, cause I doubt you want all of us internet strangers up in your vajayjay.

  • Call your obgyn or whoever the on call doctor is. If you think something is wrong please don't go on a discussion board and assume we know so much more than you about pregnancy. What if something is wrong and you are wasting precious time?

  • I had the same thing a month ago and was told it was cervix irritation that was just random and it could happen again. The dr said if it happened again it would most likely be irritation again but to go back to triage anyway. So my suggestion would be- don't panic but get it checked out.

My situation is similar at work, I have to do a lot of light lifting, bending, twisting. Each time I have noticed I seemed to overwork myself the day before.

  • I called the OB to make sure, and he gave me pretty much the same answer when he called back. It seems that he can't really say what causes it, but so long as it stopped and baby seems active he is not worried. He is going to do an exam along with the U/S on Monday but last time he didn't even see any noticeable blood by the time I got the the office to be checked.

I am asking for first hand experiences with this, as perhaps my experiences may be similar. Not for medical advice from internet strangers.

  • Always call your OB about bleeding no matter what! I had bleeding at 9, 11, and 17 weeks . My OB found a polyp on my cervix and said it could cause bleeding during my entire pregnancy. That was the cause for my bleeding but I still call any time it happens. This is not something you want to ask the bump before you call your dr.

I called him on my break the same day. He didn't have anything new to say and wants me to have an exam at my regular Monday appointment.

  • Glad you called. I hope your Dr. Can find the reason and I hope it's nothing concerning your LOs health. It can be very scary to bleed during pregnancy. T&P's your way I hope all goes well on Monday.

What is this 'intercourse' that you speak of???
