Family Planning

I need some advice. I am BF and decided Mirena was the way to go for me for BC. MH and I just had a discussion and agreed we want to start trying for our 2nd in about 1 year. Is it stupid to get Mirena implanted for 1 year? Should I get on the mini pill and use condoms for 1 year? (Which would be annoying but doable). Advice?

Re: Family Planning

  • For me it would depend on how much you would have to pay for the Mirena. I know that they are expensive, but may be covered completely by insurance. Also you might have to wait a little to get the IUD. I know my OB wouldn't do it until 12 weeks last time.

I would have gotten an IUD this time, but we are going to start TTC at the end of the summer so it didn't seem worth it for about 4 months or less. And you have to make an appointment to get it removed. I didn't want to have to wait for an appointment if we were ready.

I vote just go for the Mirena.  I had mine in for about 2 years and it was great.

  • My appt to get it is in 2.5 weeks from now. That would make it 8.5 weeks pp. So I have some time to check with insurance and make my decision. Anyone here military? We have tricare and maybe it's covered. I haven't checked yet.
  • I would decide how you would feel if you got pregnant sooner than one year. If you'd be ok with it, just use the mini pill. I hate condoms. We're going to wait a couple years before deciding about trying again, so for me it's worth getting the Mirena. I don't know if I'd mess with an IUD for only a year though, especially since my OB prefers that her patients wait three months between IUD removal and TTC.

  • I had Mirena for 14 months. Totally worth it but I had a very low out of pocket cost.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • I am thinking the same TTC timeline as you, and I think I'm going to go with the Pill. We'll probably also go with the withdrawal method, instead of condoms. If I'm ever willing to have sex again.

  • We're theoretically going to ttc in about a year and after talking with my ob and h about it, were just doing condoms. Hormonal bc and I haven't always gotten along, and with all my other endocrine issues, didn't seem worth it to mess with anything on the brief meantime. We used condoms exclusively for a long time due to said hormone issues, so we're ok with it for the short term.

  • We're not even sure if we will try for #2 and if we do it will be a few years but I'm scared of getting an IUD and hormonal bc makes me an awful person so I opted for nothing and when we do start to have sex again (in like 6 months) we'll prob use charting and possibly condoms until we decide we're ready.

If you're on the fence the Paraguard is a hormone free IUD.
