Night shift

DD will be 12 weeks old when I return to work next week. Right now she eats around 8-9 pm and then not again until 6-7 pm.

I work a rotating 12 hour schedule where I work 2 weeks of nights (7pm-7am) and 2 weeks of days (7am-7pm).

I know that I need to pump whenever baby eats so I'm not sure what to do during my night shifts. Do I pump every 3-4 hours like I plan to when I'm on my day shift or do I just pump at 9 pm and 6 am?

Re: Night shift

  • I would pump like a day shift because I'm assuming your sleeping during the day and won't be getting up every 3-4 hrs to pump while your sleeping before shifts ?

  • You don't really need to pump exactly when the baby eats, most working moms pump about every 3 hours, the idea is to replace the milk that baby will get when you're not with baby. Assuming you will be sleeping during the daytime when you work night shift, you will probably want to pump at night as often as you would be pumping during the day. I'm not sure exactly how that will work, you might have some days of engorgement during the day following your night shift pumping and vice versa when you work day shift.

  • I work nights as a nurse so 3 12's a week. I try to pump 3-4 times in a shift depending on how busy we are and when I fed her last before work. Even though you don't feed LO that frequently at night you need to make up for the time you're asleep and not feeding LO the following day. Good luck!

Ps, maybe I'm crazy but it love work in nights as a new mom. I feel like I get to enjoy more time with her since I'm home when she's awake. Sure I'm tired, but what new mom isn't tired? And that's what caffeine is for.

    Good luck!
  • I actually was planning to pump during the day. I plan to pump right before I go to sleep, wake up 4 hours later to pump and then go back up sleep and pump when I wake up.
