Babies: 6 - 9 Months

starting finger foods

My LO id 7.5 months and becoming fussy with all puree foods. Thinking of starting finger foods and wondering what foods are good to start on. She will take gerber puffs but not really a fan of anything else yet. Have tried potato, cauliflour, pancake, and lightly toasted bread. She either spits it out or gags on it.

Re: starting finger foods

  • I agree with pp about gagging. Totally normal. And spitting it out....babies are learning to eat, just because they spit it out and gag doesn't mean they don't like it. Keep offering all sorts of food. She will become more adept at handling different textures and tastes. I don't think there are many foods that are off limits! We've been feeding our 7 month old the exact same foods we eat. She used to gag a lot but barely does now. And still lots of food gets "spit out" but she loves trying! We just let her feed herself and so far there hasn't been a thing she doesn't like, from raw onions and bell peppers, to steak and fish, roasted and steamed veggies, fruits, yogurt, scrambled eggs with cheese and avocado is one of her favorites!! No need to buy special processed foods! Let her eat what you eat! Not much is off limits!

  • Broccoli is great since the stalk makes a great handle. Cheerios, toast with hummus, banana, freeze dried apple slices, shredded fresh apple, mandarin oranges canned in juice, avocado chunks, baked sweet potato fries, oven fries, asparagus, peas, quesadillas are a good vehicle for veggies purées, beans, etc. Oh and my kids have both loved long spaghetti--it makes a mess but is fun for them to eat.
