One & Done: Only child

So

A sales rep from my company is traveling to the Philippines. He is leaving today. He said he was getting some more information on his adoptive son who is from the Philippines. Well the truth came out today. 3 words MAIL ORDER BRIDE. I'm not downing it just saying why don't you just say that instead of covering it up??

Re: So

  • I mean, I can see why a person wouldn't say it, however, won't it be obvious when people don't see a child around?

His adoptive son is real BUT he lives with his mother in another state. Apparently he just told everyone this so that they wouldn't question his trip. UMM hi we are all going to notice the woman you bring back. Unless you lock her up at your house.

Oops, sorry, I did not get that part of the story.  He didn't mention bringing back a woman?  He could have EASILY explained that in a way that wasn't, "Mail order bride" if he wanted to.

Our cleaning lady at our old home was a mail order bride from Russia.  It was interesting.  I felt really bad for her (they have been married several years), because the guy and his family are pretty strange and her freedom seems pretty limited (though I'm sure she has reasons she went through with this).  They have sweet kids though.

Me neither!  I don't think it is so much for us in the US, but maybe so for other countries?

So, is his son adopted from the Philippines as well?  Seems like a strange cover story!

Yes. He and his first wife adopted bc she couldn't get pregnant.
  • He is like 15 now and is thriving over here.

Doesn't that seem weirdly coincidental?  I mean, did he choose a wife from the Philippines because his son is from there?  Odd, odd, odd.

I wouldn't put it past him.... and yes yes it does.

Plus and not that should contributes really. But he tans like EVERYDAY. I think he does that to appear more "natural" with him as well.
  • Maybe they can film him for a new season of My 90 Day Fiance
    I loved that show.

Me too! That is the first thing I thought of. Not sure why he revealed the real reason. Couldn't he claim he met her on the trip, not that he should need to cover it up because to each their own. But why go through a big charade and then let the cat out of the bag anyway? I loved that show.

I think that's weirdly kind of... sweet?  IF he was set on getting a mail order bride (which is creepy and gross and rife with exploitation), but IF he was doing that anyway, it seems like choosing the same country makes sense.  Maybe it will give his son a connection to his birth country, and/or make his new wife feel more comfortable?

Honestly, though, it's probably because the US has a particular historical relationship with the Philippines, so stuff like visas is easier.
If true, that would be a great reason.  I'm going to go with that. :)

  • Totally a real thing and I am obsessed with it. I almost wrote my law school note on the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act. Most of these marriages are awful -- women desperate to escape poverty and men who are against "American feminism" looking for a submissive docile woman (a stereotype ESP for Asian women.) In fact the women they end up with are not submissive and docile, they are usually very in control of their lives (hello, they made choices to change their circumstances) and the marriages end up in violence. This doesn't even get into human trafficking and women who are actually sold into marriage.

  • I know two men who did this. Russian brides aren't exactly docile, turns out.

  • I live in the Philippines. I loved that 90 Day Fiance show, I couldn't help but wonder who processed Aya's K1 visa.
  • This makes me think of a random story: One of my best girlfriend is Russian and her husband is American. Her family escaped here when she was ten, so her accent is pretty nil, yet she can do her Mom's thick accent. One time they were shopping in the grocery store and he asked to go back and switch something she'd picked up for another brand. She put on the thickest accent ever and said, "You are right. I am sorry. Thank you for training me. I'm so lucky to have big strong American man like you." They got some appalled stares, but both laughed their butts off. Russian women are not submissive as a whole.
  • My husband is from Holland and I met him online. He immigrated here after our wedding. I'm just throwing that out there. #maleordergroomforthewin  hahaha. I'm just kidding. Well not about H being from Holland and meeting him online. But we did that junk the legit way, I swear!
