Breastfeeding

Save or throw out my stash?

I've got an entire gift bag full (I use the "store bags flat in a gift bag" method) which I would estimate to be about 80 ounces of milk frozen. It is from DD's first two weeks of life in the beginning of February. Really good quality, yellow, colostrum-filled milk. Well last week I had to start an elimination diet free from dairy, soy, wheat/gluten, eggs, nuts, shellfish, and caffeine to try to figure out the cause of her tummy problems. All this milk will probably be bad by the time she is outgrowing any food sensitivities or allergies she may have. What do I do? Save it in hopes it is still good 6 months down the road, or throw it away? I can't find any donation information for my area, and am not even sure if it would meet donation criteria.

  • I don't know about the allergy question, but you can definitely donate it. Don't throw all of that liquid gold away! I've donated through Human Milk 4 Human Babies as well as Eats on Feets. It's just mom-to-mom as PP said. The mommas I've donated to always offered to replaced the bags, as well. Check out both on Facebook, it's really very easy and could help out another LO in need.

  • I'd hold onto it until the elimination period is over, just in case the tummy troubles are caused by something else.

  • Do you have a deep freezer? I had the same issue with dd having a dairy intolerance.  I held on to the milk I had pumped and stored it in the deep freeze.  She is now 10 months old and has outgrown the intolerance and can handle the old milk just fine.  It should be good in a deep freeze for a year.

This is what I did as well.  Once DS outgrew it I was able to use it.  If you choose to go this route just make sure you mark the milk so you don't confuse it.
