Inverted nipples

So turns out I have inverted nipples. I never really thought about it until I'm reading all these books and my nipples don't look anything like the pictures. I did some research and they are definitely inverted. My one book says the baby's mouth should suck on the areola, not just the nipple so would it really matter? Can I breast feed? Will it really be that much more difficult? Will they pop out eventually? I'm getting discouraged already

Re: Inverted nipples

  • You can definitely still breastfeed with flat or inverted nipples. It is a bit more challenging but it's not impossible. I agree with PP. Talk with your OB/MW and also talk with a lactation consultant. I've seen some women with flat and inverted nipples use a nipple shield, per their choice, to help with breastfeeding.

  • I'm signing up for a BF class. I was planning on buying/registering for a pump and keeping it closed in case it didn't work out. Now I'm thinking I will just hold off on the pump because I won't even use it until at least a few weeks after he is born.
  • If you're considering a pump I'd check with your insurance. I know that some insurances (Cigna for me) will provide a free breast pump and all you have to do is have your Doc write a perscription and fax it in. Not sure about all insurances it wasn't openly advertised so I had to call and ask.

  • I have inverted nipples and breastfed for 16 months with DD.

I needed to use a nipple shield for the first 5 months until she was able to latch on her own, but other than that I had no issues.

I bought my pump on the way home from the hospital.  FWIW I bought a Medela Swing because it said it was good for flat nipples on the box... but I have no idea if it makes a difference

  • I never realized mine were flat until I tried breastfeeding DS and it was pretty challenging at first. We stuck with it, though he would have trouble latching and really fight it at first. I would actually use the pump for a few minutes before I tried to nurse him to kind of draw them out a little for latching easier. That worked well for us at first and eventually we didn't need it anymore. Mine are still pretty flat normally, but they kind of pop out more than they used to when breastfeeding, so I would say they kind of adjust. I'm hoping due to that breastfeeding will be smoother with this LO from the start, but who knows.

  • Mine are flat/inverted and teeny, and I managed 4 months breastfeeding ds, but I had anxiety/depression pop up at that point that forced me to switch to formula. I used a shield the whole time. This time, one of my nipples has popped out more, but I expect to need a shield for some time, if not the whole time. Totally manageable, though!
  • I'm a bf peer supporter and can say that inverted nipples will not matter. Getting extra support will be very helpful to you. And yes baby puts as much breast in as possible to get the best latch, not just the nipple. Stick your thumb in your mouth, that's how far back nipple has to reach to get best latch. Believe me you'll know about it pretty quick if baby has a bad latch! X
  • FWIW, I found out the Medela makes a contraption that draws out inverted nipples, they're like $10, I might give them a try.

  • I breastfed pretty easily (after the initial pain) for eight months with one flat and one inverted nipple. It can be done! At first I would pump for a couple of minutes to "draw them out" before latching. But eventually I didn't have to do that any more. Definitely have a nurse or preferably an LC help you with the first few latches. It's especially easy to screw up the latch with flat nipples (ouch!). Don't get discouraged yet! It's possible!

Yes, the nipple everter. I just bought one! Hoping to avoid the annoyance of pumping to draw them out.

Do you use it before baby or after?
