Interview Question

I applied for a job and received a call in response to my resume and it kind of turned into an impromptu phone interview. I feel like it went pretty well. He seemed interested in my experience, etc, etc. Anyway, on to my question...should I send a follow up email now, or wait until I (hopefully) meet them in person and then send something? I just want to keep my name in his radar. Your thoughts?

Re: Interview Question

  • If he gave you his email or you already had it through the application process, I'd shoot a quick thank you for calling you and confirm that you're interested, etc. I would make it pretty brief but I'd send one....

  • I don't think there is any downside to contacting him with a quick email just to thank him for his time and reiterate that you're looking forward to learning more about them or something along those lines.

  • @K3am - i'm curious, can you give some examples of what NOT to do in the follow up email.

I always advise our students to send an email and keep it short and sweet to make two main points: thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

  • I don't care one way or another after most interviews. I will say that if I get an email with typos in it, I'm really annoyed by the lack of attention to detail. BUT, we just had a situation where we interviewed 2 internal candidates who were so very close based on raw scores. These guys were 1 point apart on the interview answer score sheet I kept. The one who got the job is the one who sent a thank you note to the group, expressing how grateful he was for the opportunity to interview and how excited he was about the job. It wasn't the determining factor, but it helped him.
