Prenatal vitamins

My daughter is seven months old and I am breastfeeding. I am about to run out of my prenatal vitamins. How important is it that I'm on them while breastfeeding? Would it be okay to stop taking them?

Re: Prenatal vitamins

  • What is keeping you from just buying another bottle?

I would continue taking them because that's what I was advised to do by my doctor. Baby is getting everything she needs from you, including vitamins.

  • Same here, I'd go to the drugstore and buy a new bottle. You need to be healthy especially you're BF-ing. I took calcium, Vit. C and multivitamins when I was BFing DD. Now, I take multivitamins and iron.
  • I plan to keep taking prenatals until I'm done having babies and have some long-term BC. It's recommended that all women of childbearing age (if you could POSSIBLY get pregnant even if you're preventing... Accidents happen) take a folic acid supplement. Taking folic acid for 3 months BEFORE conception (& during pg) lowers risk of NT defects. There's folic acid in my PNV. So I'll keep taking them while BF and then until I have another kid and finish BF that one! And then we'll see.
Ditto all of this.  I will continue to take a prenatal vitamin until I know we are done done.

  • LO's doctor suggested I continue taking them while I EBF and prescribed them to me. They clearly state "for pregnant or lactating women" so I can see why he would want me to take them as I meet that criteria.

Yep, I kept taking them between my two girls.

  • I never took them while pregnant and never started after delivery, so I don't think they are necessary

Ah, that's you. Many moms choose to follow our doctors advice on these kinds of things.

  • Okay, thanks for the advice! The ones I've been getting are around $45 a bottle. Is that about what everyone else is spending? I wanted natural vitamins, not synthetic.

All my blood work came back above normal so my midwife did not find it necessary to take vitamins. Everyone is different, I'm just answering the OP

And you know for certain that you aren't developing premature bone density issues because of calcium deficiency?  I'm pretty sure a lot of these issues do not show up until years down the road...

I eat a good balanced diet. I'm not debating my health choices on here.
  • I never took vitamins while BFing and both me and baby turned out fine (monitored, advised and backed up by my health team). I also eat a varied diet.

Since moving to the US, I've noticed everyone is obsessed with vitamins over here and several people have been horrified that I'm not taking any.

If you eat a good diet then the difference between taking vitamins and not taking them is minimal. For someone who eats when they can and doesn't necessarily get everything they need then it will make a significant difference. Use common sense here - someone who doesn't eat green veggies will probably need a little extra iron just as someone with a dairy allergy could probably do with a calcium boost but no-one ever died from not taking enough vitamin supplements.
