Anyone induced early for something other than pre E?

Went to see the urologist again today for my hydronephrosis and he said it is only going to get worse the further along I get. Then went to see my midwife to discuss options. I told her how the urologist said to discuss with them the possibility of inducing a few weeks early. I didn't think it would be a big deal at 37 weeks but my midwife said I had to meet with the high risk doctor to get his opinion. She even said they might want to do an amino before I would be induced to see if his lungs were matured. I had no idea that would be necessary at 37 weeks. I thought babies were considered full term at 37 but she said it has always been 39. I don't have pre E but we got talking about it because those mothers have to be induced early sometimes. She said it is entirely different because pre e babies actually mature faster and their lungs are usually ahead of the game as natures way of preparing. Anyone induced early for other than pre e? Was an amino needed? When were you induced? I guess scheduled early c sections would have the same worries.

I was induced at 38 weeks for IUGR. I did not require an amnio.

ETA: I would thinks the risk involved with amnio wouldn't be worth it at this point.

The new standard says that anything before 38 (edited to fix a number) weeks is considered pre-term.
I was not induced (breech baby), but was delivered at 36 weeks (planning for 37) due to IUGR, low AFI and fetal distress.

  • I was induced at 38 weeks for pre e, but I'm fairly positive had it been even a week earlier my daughter would have ended up in the NICU. She was small and had trouble breathing for a bit after birth. The NICU came to evaluate her at delivery. The closer you get to 40 weeks, the better!

  • I've done some research and the risks of an amnio mainly look like pre term labor which would be the end result anyway. I'm also finding a 3rd tri amnio is pretty common with women who have elective inductions for medical issues. I will get some more answers Wednesday with the high risk doc.
  • In out birth class last week the nurse said 37 weeks was considered full term. Other than that I'm clueless. Thoughts and prayers.

  • I was induced at 36w3d after PPROM. I had been leaking for 24 hours before they decided to do an amnio. By the time they were ready (they were checking to see if I WAS leaking), there wasn't enough fluid to even check. I was induced that night and delivered 23 hours later. Thankfully it was an easy labor and delivery, but he was considered preemie.
  • I was induced at 37.5 for Pre-E with my son 8 years ago.
TERM Pregnancy used to be 37 weeks. Not full term. Thats 39 weeks.

That is now considered early term. The guidelines were changed recently.

    Full term is 39 weeks.

  • My SIL delivered all 3 of her babies at 37w. She had an amino with babies 1 & 3 to determine if they were developed enough (went into early labor with 2) 1 was fine with no NICU time (amnio showed good lung development). 2 ended up with 10 days in NICU (IMO they should have tried to stop labor) he now suffers from severe asthma and allergies. 3 showed lungs weren't quite developed, but for whatever reason her dr chose to go on and take her. She was in NICU for 2 days, but doesn't seem to have much problem now other than often being sick, but all 3 of SILs kids are always sick so who knows. If it were me unless there was a serious risk to myself or baby I would wait until at least 39 weeks. As it is I'm pregnant with twins, diabetic and have HBP and my drs won't induce until 38w unless there is risk to me or babies from one of my medical problems.

  • Thanks all. I have severe Hydronephrosis that is only going to get worse as baby gets bigger. Stents have a high risk of preterm labor so they just want to watch my renal functions and see about inducing early. The risk for me is permanent damage to both my kidneys. My midwife said I need to talk to high risk OB to discuss risks/benefits for me and baby. Obviously I would love him to stay put until he is full term, but I also don't want to be in my 50s with kidney failure
  • I don't think that is true for pree. iugr and pree are actually frequently linked so the baby is smaller and doesn't do as well. I had a cs early for iugr and pree. They would not even let me labor because too risky for the baby.

  • Your midwife is wrong about preeclampsia & babies lungs maturing faster. That's a nice idea, but no. If an early delivery is anticipated, they can give you steroids to help the baby's lungs mature faster.

I had IUGR with this pregnancy, and was planning for delivery by 34 weeks. They were going to do an amnio first to check for lung maturity. The risk is preterm labor, so that's irrelevant when you're planning a delivery. Steroids aren't always needed at 37 weeks, but your high risk OB can determine whether that would be helpful in your case.

I'm sorry you're dealing with the stress of an early delivery plus your own medical problems. If you have to go for induction at 37 weeks to save your kidneys, your baby should do just fine though. Good luck!
  • Doctors (hospitals) for that matter, from what I was told cannot safely induce you before 39 weeks unless deemed medically necessary. Your safe to have your LO at 37 weeks but it has to come naturally.
