Does anybody know why baby wearing calms LO down when holding him does not?

My LO has these horrible screaming jags and the only thing that will get him to chill out is to put him in the Bjorn and wear him. He INSTANTLY calms down the minute he is in the Bjorn. The obvious answer is...he wants to be close to you/he wants to be held. But simply holding him closer will not calm him down. He has to be worn. Anybody know the reason for this?

EDIT: Also, obviously this situation may be unique to my little one, but I have heard of other babies being calmed by baby wearing but not by being held.

  • Maybe it cradles him differently? Or your movement in it rocks him differently?

  • @Ziggy903 -perhaps. I've tried to recreate the hold with just my hands to no avail. Oh well, breaking out the Bjorn is  a very small price to pay for peace and quiet.

@Junebugz1: good theory. never thought of this. He HATES being swaddled, but maybe the Bjorn provides him with a type of restriction he likes.

  • I've read it's because it feels more like being in your womb with the suspended, hammock like feeling.

This. Also, being so close LO can hear your heart beat, breathing etc.

I wear DS everyday from 5-7 pm. It helps a ton with the witching hour.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • No answer to your question, OP, but I'm starting to wonder if my opinion On baby wearing is wrong and that I should try it.

I'm not sure what your opinion is, but I initially thought that all of the baby wearing hoopla was just trendy, "attachment parenting" hype. However, baby wearing has really calmed down LO and enabled me to get a  lot done around the house.
  • @shellbell3845‌ try it! DS looooves it!

  • @jpoindahouse‌ @ziggy903‌ I totally thought it was some attachment parenting thing for overprotective parents (no offense), and I have a pretty laid back LO, but I can totally see how it could make life easier. There are times when LO demands to be held and I need to be doing things like making dinner or putting on eyeliner. It just makes sense now. #dontjudgeabookbyitscover

  • @jpoindahouse‌ it's not just your LO! I'm currently wearing DS, who has been passed out for nearly 2 hrs. Before that this morning he slept maybe 30 minutes between feeding and then crying for no apparent reason. I don't know why wearing works better than holding, and I don't care! I'm just happy that I can calm him down.
  • Its crazy how it works but I wear him every day (Moby right now). I agree with a sense of swaddling/suspended motion. I just have to figure out how to keep him awake in it (so I can wear him more!) He falls asleep within 5 min and naps for a good 3 hrs...

  • I'm going with the hammock theory plus Swaddle. I also thought it was crunchy hippie nonsense but it works!

For those who wear their LOs, do they fuss at first? I've tried to put DD into the moby and the ergo but she cries so I take her out. Should I give it more time and she should calm down? (Sorry to thread jack!)

Yep she cries for a few minutes but then I walk and give her a paci (which she will not use out of the moby) and then bam... DEEP sleep.

Everybody's LO is unique, but for my baby the carrier immediately calms him 85-90% of the time. The remainder of the time, he calms down if I make dramatic movements with him in the carrier....I will strap him in and if he doesn't calm down I will march in place, do squats and even lunges for 5-10 minutes. He loves it and calms down and I get a mini workout!. Then I just walk around the house and move about as normal. On the very rare occasion that my mini workout does not calm him down, it has always been because he was hungry or had a wet/dirty diaper and I just didn't realize it. Once I feed or change him and put him back in the carrier he falls fast asleep.
