Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Rolling over in sleep

My LO is a few days short of 3 months.. He has recently learned to roll over from back to belly but gets stuck most of the time on one arm. He has been doing it in his sleep at night for the past few nights and of course gets mad when he is stuck, wakes up, wakes me and DH up... and repeats all night. Any suggestions???

  • He hates it!
  • how about just swaddling his legs?  they make those swaddle blankets with velcro that are perfect for this.  My 1 month old started traveling in his sleep in his pack and play, so i decided to just swaddle his legs and it worked!  He now stays put.
  • How is the baby going to roll when he's swaddled? I've known people to swaddle past 6 months old. Maybe they only swaddled the legs then.

  • Actually no I haven't. My son never did that and this baby hasn't attempted to roll yet.

  • Do you have him in a sleep sack? Sometimes if they can roll without one, the extra weight of the sack will keep them on their back. But don't worry, the novelty of rolling wears off fast and he'll either stop practicing in his sleep or just become a belly sleeper who doesn't get angry.

They might not roll. Some six month olds don't. And some babies can't roll when swaddled, others can. My older son learned to roll in his sleep when completely swaddled at four months old, and I found him face down and fast asleep in his crib the next morning.

  • Haven't you ever seen a baby pull her legs up (so her body makes an L) and then flip on her side?  If she's swaddled, there's nothing (aka, her arm, which is what gets most babies stuck when they try to start rolling) keeping her from going all the way over, and that's precisely why it's dangerous to swaddle once they can roll, because they don't have access to their arms to push their face up out of the mattress.

Exactly this. Once DS was able to roll consistently we quit swaddling. Babies are capable of rolling while swaddled.

It made for a few horrible weeks of sleep in our house but it's better than finding he had rolled and was unable breathe.

OP, don't swaddle. You could be in for some rough nights ahead but your LO will get used to his freedom of movement and eventually figure out how to get comfortable.

My DS does this also, swaddled our not. Every night he works himself over and eventually gets himself right agent the crib slats. We only swaddle arms out now, use mesh bumpers to prevent stuck limbs, and have a motion monitor for peace of mind.
