lipase/ sour milk

Ladies, I've been nursing lo for 9 months. I went back to work when he was 6 weeks and would pump and never had an issue with my milk going bad.

Fast forward to now, I'm no longer working and I've started to pump again to build up a freezer stash.

When i pump, sometimes I'll stick my milk in the fridge until i get enough to freeze. i pumped one day, and thenext day my h decided to give lo a bottle so he took milk out the fridge. Lo wouldn't take it, and i tasted it and it was sour. is this lipase?

I've also warmed up milk from the freezer...again it taste bad.

Both times there was no sour/bad smell.

Is there a way to test for lipase? Is it something I'm eating?

What can i do to fix this?

Re: lipase/ sour milk

  • Lipase usually has a soapy taste and metallic smell. If it tasted sour, it was probably sour (not necessarily lipase).

You might want to check to make sure your bottles are getting really clean after washing too because that can make it seem funky.

If it is lipase and baby will take it, I wouldn't worry about it. Otherwise, you might want to test it by putting a small quantity in the fridge, and tasting or smelling it at different time intervals to see when it "turns." If it's lipase, you can scald your milk and then freeze or offer it.
