No Milk...

My LO is 16 months and at her 12m appt her pediatrician told me to get rid of her bottles. She has been drinking water and juice from a sippy cup since 6 months without any issue.  I have been trying for the last few weeks to transition her milk from the bottle to the sippy cup and she wants no part of it.  She doesn't cry or seem to miss the milk and has maintained her routine.  She eats really well and I think since she hasn't been taking the milk and is missing the fat that it provides she is more hungry than usual.

My husband is very concerned that she is not drinking milk or getting the calcium it provides.  She loves cheese and yogurt but I realize it is not the same quantity.  Does anyone have any other suggestions for getting her to drink milk?

Re: No Milk...

  • My daughter absolutely refused to drink milk from the non-spill sippy cups but finally would drink it from a regular straw cup like the Take n Toss straw cups (munchkin makes a similar one with a better locking lid). I guess she didn't want to have to work hard to get it from the cup, even though she would drink water from the non-spill cups. I only give milk to her with meals and snacks, since I don't want her carrying it around and spilling milk all over the house. She still drinks water from her other sippies. Try a few different types of cups to see if that sparks her interest.

  • Pretty much all @ELF4321 said. When we first introduced milk, we used a different sippy cup for milk only.  Now that DS is older and we've transitioned to straw cup, he has no issues drinking milk from the Take & Toss.

We also only give milk to DS at meals and snacks.  Water for all other times.

You can also try making your DD fruit smoothies with WCM & yogurt (plus fruits, of course).  My son refused to eat yogurt as-is when he turned 13 m ( even though he was eating it since 6m).  I ended up making him a smoothie daily for snack in order to get in some yogurt in him.  The smoothie was also a transition from BFing too for us.  FWIW, when he turned 16m, he decided he'll eat yogurt as-is again, but I still make him a smoothie almost daily.

  • We got rid of bottles at 17 months with DS1 and he has refused milk ever since. I just make sure he has at least two servings of yogurt every day for the vitamin D and calcium and try to provide him with other foods that are rich in calcium. I also started to give him a multivitamin since he is a picky eater.
  • Drop the juice and don't stress about the milk. No one needs cows milk. Yes, it's an easy way to get in the fat, vitamins, etc, but it's not do or die. Keep offering it but add plenty of other full fat dairy products, other healthy fats. Etc.

I tend to agree with this.  Our pedi said that some kids don't drink any milk and are perfectly fine, as long as they're getting the proper nutrients from other food sources.
