Cradle cap (Seborrheic dermatitis)

For the past 2 weeks my LO (6 wks old) has been developing small red rashlike bumps on his cheeks, temples and forehead. Then yesterday it spread to his chest & back of the neck. I took him to see the dr to get checked out today. Doc said it was cradle cap or Seborrheic dermatitis. She just recommended applying Aquaphor on his skin & it should go away with time. Doc didn't see it as a big deal.

It could have been a lot worse. I was totally afraid it was caused by an allergic reaction to my breast milk or any # of things. Luckily doc said it has nothing to do with my breast milk or what I eat. My cousin's son is allergic to EVERYTHING & so hard to deal with it.

My LO does not seem to be bothered by this at all, isn't itchy, and his poop has remained normal. I'm more bothered by it than him. And since we were there, LO got his vaccinations. Poor guy! We go back in 2 wks for his official 2 month check-up & see how his skin is doing.

Anyone else with skin ailments, cradle cap or eczema? How are you dealing with it?

  • I have always just rubbed baby's head w olive oil(I'm Greek and my grandma literally did everything w olive oil) and then took a fine toothed comb and combed it out. It's really NBD although I have never had it go anywhere other then there scalp.

  • I just took my son today for the same exact reason, rashes in the same spots you mentioned. His pediatrician said it was baby acne caused by the hormones and it would clear on it's own and to leave it alone. It got really inflamed though so she said I could do hydrocortisone 2x a day for 5 days to get the redness down.

    It sounds like baby acne to me, isnt cradle cap just on the scalp? Cradle cap isn't rashlike either, is it? Ive never dealt with it before. My LO has baby acne on her cheeks, forehead, chest, and back of her neck right now. I've used Aquaphor on it a few times.

    @rosie137, has the hydrocortisone worked?

  • My LO has exactly that and when I called his pedi he advised aquaphor as well. It's just something that will go with time. Funnily so I asked my pedi what the solution was and his response was 'Photoshop' ;)
  • @Missy0483‌ I've only put it on once today but he was less fussy than he has been so I think it's helped some.

  • DDs looks worst right after her bath. That really dries them out so limit baths to twice a week (once if you can get away with it!). I apply a little aquaphor or baby oil and it does help. Luckily hers hasn't been too bad... Yet.
