Recurrent mastitis that was cured?

I'm currently on my 7th round of mastitis. DD is 14 months old. This is my 3rd time having it since mid February. I've taken dicloxacillin and bactrim in the past and have also had a couple of Rocephin shots. The longest time I've ever gone without mastitis was from October to February. My OB did a blood and a milk culture but they were both inconclusive because I was already taking antibiotics at the time. The plan for now is to do double antibiotics (Augmentin and Bactrim), If it comes back, we will try another milk culture and possibly low dose antibiotics until I wean. I already take lecithin to prevent clogged ducts, but my mastitis typically doesn't present with clogged ducts. I also use APNO about once daily.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Or even better, did anyone else have recurrent mastitis that was finally cured? I'm getting so discouraged, and neither DD nor I are ready to wean. I need some hope! TIA.

ETA: I'm no longer pumping while at work. DD nurses in the evening/morning. I haven't had any trouble with plugged ducts since weaning from the pump and sometimes feel a little full by the end of the day, but I'm not really engorged or in pain.

  • Thanks for the reply! The doctor said the Bactrim, which I'm taking for the 3rd time in 6 weeks, will kill MRSA. I'm scared to not take the antibiotics because I am terrified of an abscess. I will definitely insist on another culture if it comes back again. I'll also ask about thrush, but I don't think that's it because I am always careful to take probiotics whenever I'm on antibiotics. Thanks again for the reply!

  • Maybe try Clindamycin?  My LO is only 5.5 months, so I don't have your track record, but I did have 3 episodes so far.  From what I understand, Clindamycin may be better for resistant organisms.  It has very low concentration in BM, so baby's exposure will be minimal.  Be sure to take a lot of probiotics with it, b/c it is pretty hard on you GI system.

As far as MRSA is concerned, if you had it, you would need Vancomycin or another potent antibiotic.  Bactrim isn't going to cut it.
