Soy Formula

Addie has been struggling during feedings (spitting up and soaking the bib with formula, pulling back, arching her back, screaming, etc).  I began mentioning this to the doctor a couple of weeks ago and this past week the doctor asked me to collect a stool sample.  Today they tested the stool and it turns out that she had invisible blood in it which indicates a milk protein allergy.  The doctor said to switch to soy formula for the next couple of weeks and then they will test her stool again to see if she is also allergic to soy.  I am not a fan of soy considering much if not all soy is a GMO, so I began researching soy formulas and have found a lot of negative information (https://www.askdrsears.com/topics/feeding-eating/bottle-feeding/soy-formulas) .  I was just wondering what you all now about soy formula, if anyone else is feeding their baby soy formula and what if any alternatives exist.

Re: Soy Formula

  • Did you talk to the ped about this? It's really a question more for him than us. I would think that if you feel so strongly anti-soy, you would bring it up where it matters.

If you want truly non-soy, non-milk formula, you'll need something like enfamil's nutramigen or similac's alimentium. They are hypoallergenic.

  • I had my 2ds on soy and I remember my grandfather giving me all this info it was terrible for my son in general, It causes female characteristics, small male parts.... For what it's worth my son is a perfect almost 9'year old. So soy worked for us, he was a much happier baby. I agree w pp talk to your pedi.
  • Thanks for the responses ladies:)  I will bring up my concerns with the ped next week.  Today it was kind of last minute that she switched us to Soy and I didn't really have time to process it until this evening.  Thanks for the two hypoallergenic formula names.
  • we're on Similac Alimentum because DD is allergic to soy and milk but we had tried Similac soy first. we started to see a difference after the first feeding of Alimentum, which was a relief, but it's almost two weeks later and she's still having issues with reflux so we're also on Zantac. Alimentum is much more expensive than the soy (double the price) and once opened, the bottle doesn't last for more than 2 days. I'd talk to your pedi before switching to anything.

  • If you think it's a milk protein allergy try gerber gentle or enfamil gentese. Gerber has the protein 100% broken down and enfamil has like 70%less unbroken down protein. LO breaks out in eczema terribly from a milk sensitivity Nd this cleared him up right away without going soy or super expensive hypoallergenic. Might be worth mentioning to the pedi.

if it's a milk allergy, do NOT use Enfamil Gentlease. while it's broken down, it's still milk based and will not help anything.

ETA: while @keags5496‌ said it helped her LO, it didn't help mine one bit and made her situation worse than when she had BM.
