Upper back/shoulder blade pain??

Ok, so this is totally random...not asking for a diagnosis, I swear.

Have any of you had shoulder blade..and/or upper back pain at the end of pregnancy? Holy shit mine has been killing me since yesterday.

I thought maybe I slept on it wrong or something but I sleep in a recliner...so there's not much room for position error.

It's probably just heavy belly strain, but good lawwwwddd I want to scream!

What's aching you today?

  • Surprisingly, it could be trapped gas. I see this constantly in postop patients. For whatever reason the gas settles there. Simethicone (gas x) is worth a shot!

  • I had that towards the end as well. It would mostly start in the afternoon and was unbearable. I feel your pain. On the upside, mine went away right after LO was born.

  • Try a golf ball or other small ball and lean against a wall to target the spot you're having the pain. Squat up and down and if it helps stretch the arm across you that seems to be having the pain under the shoulder blade. I was in a car accident a few years ago and this by far as helped that pain more than anything else I've done.

  • I have sporadic upper back pain, mostly under my right shoulder blade. I really think it is linked to being on the computer all day with my hand on the mouse. relaxing and laying down helps.

today it's my mid-to-lower back that hurts. IDK why! even had a few solid contractions. cross your fingers it's something starting...but I doubt it. this guy is gonna cook some more :p

If it's trapped gas, would a visit to a chiro to release it be worth a shot? I mean, when mine gets to popping me I feel a billion times better after... Then again, I thought it was a lot like popping your fingers; just trapped nitrogen or whatever in the joints that makes that popping sound when it's released?

  • Not so much shoulder pain, but holy moly the mid/lower back pain from sleeping!  I sleep on my side and I think the weight of my belly pulls my muscles down, straining my back.  When I get up to pee and also when I get up for the day I am SO stiff and sore.  I make sure to switch sides but it doesn't really help.  It's sad when sleeping puts you in more pain than walking around all day with a giant belly!

I had the same pain as well. Driving was a killer. It vanished after I had DD

I've had it since about month five. Mine hits everyday around 2:00 no matter what I am doing.

  • Hah, that's my ordinary back pain I've had for years --- it went AWAY during pregnancy (to be replaced by standard low back pain).

I second the suggestion re: a ball, and also upper back/chest stretches, like grasping your hands together behind your back and gently lifting, alternating with the "eagle pose" in yoga.

  • This happened to me AFTER I gave birth! I still can't sleep on my back without waking up with it killing me.

I have this, but I've had it for years. Putting pressure on it helps, so I sleep on that side.
