Another ear infection, sigh

Poor DD. This is her third ear infection since right before Christmas. She wasn't even showing any signs this time, but the doctor discovered it when we went for her well visit. For those of you whose LOs get frequent ear infections, any idea what is too many and requires a visit to an ENT?

  • We were referred after 3 incidents in 6 months.  ENT waivered for about 5 minutes until she heard we were in daycare and then said - yes lets do tubes.

Shit, I hope it doesn't come to that.

We were referred to the ENT after 4 infections in 6 months. He failed his hearing test at the ENT which was the deciding factor for us to do tubes.

ETA: plus, we went through a lot of antibiotics for each infection, multiple with each infection. I was happy to be able to use ear drop antibiotics with the tubes instead of an oral. He has had one ear infection since getting tubes and the ear drops cleared it right up.

  • We were referred to the ENT with both kids after 4 in 6 months, the standard at our office, but it was actually 4 is much less than 6 months for us.

Hopefully the infection clears up before you DD starts noticing it. Good luck!

  • I will say this - I was FREAKED out about getting tubes - but lets break it down.  We showed up at 8am (yes the no food after midnight thing SUCKED I won't lie) - we played in the room for a while with the mask.  AT around 9 they took her (I bawled as soon as she was out of the room) - we walked to the waiting room - 10 mins later they called us back and it was done.  She was disoriented from the anethesia and upset about it - but by the time we got home (it was a 30 min drive) and DH held her in the rocker for 5 minutes she was sound asleep.

She woke up an hour later and our day went one.  SO.. 2.5 hours total from arrival to nap and really 15 mins of her being gone from me.. it really wasn't THAT BAD.  And we are likely going to do it again to get her adnoids out :(

  • Luci got sent to the ENT after 3 infections in 3 months where she was on antibiotics almost the entire time.  The ENT said he normally waits until the 6 month mark that others have mentioned, but when her ears were still infected and she grossly failed the hearing test, he said lets do it.

Now we are dealing with other infections that are causing fluid in her ear, but it isn't infected fluid.  So, they are doing what they are supposed to, according to the doctor.

  • Cruz only had 2 ear infections that we knew about, but after 30 days of oral antibiotics and fluid buildup behind the eardrums that never cleared and caused him to fail hearing tests for 3 months, we were referred to ENT. I am very happy with the results so far.
