Another thank you question -- pre and post birth presents from same people

After my shower, I wrote thank you notes to everyone who attended or sent me a gift. Since the baby was born, a number of these people have given additional gifts. Do they get another thank you? If so, do I need to use different note cards? If not, can I write an additional note on the birth announcement or follow up with an email or something less formal?

  • I'd send another card, separate from the announcement. I wouldn't worry one second about whether it's the same card or not. I went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of notecards. No clue who got what. Ain't nobody got time for that.

  • I sent thank you cards to everyone that brought a second gift (which was pretty much everyone), except for the extremely close friends and grandparents, since it wasn't a formal occasion. Most of my friends asked for no thank you card when giving the gift. I agree it shouldn't matter if it's the same style thank you card. If someone takes the time and money to give you a gift, I'm a believer in sending a thank you card.
  • Ditto... I did a second thank you for folks who sent another gift after the birth as well as one to friends who gave us hand-me-down clothes and/or brought meals.

  • Thanks for the input -- I will definitely write more thank you notes. However, I have a lot less free time than I did pre-baby, so hopefully the timeframe for getting these done is a bit more flexible? I was also a lot more organized about who had exactly given what before, so hopefully I don't forget anyone/mess anything up!

And I guess I'll keep using the baby thank you notes I bought for the shower...I just wasn't sure if it was a bit weird to send people the same card twice.

  • I was massively overwhelmed by the thank you notes I had to write post baby. Not that I didn't appreciate all the gifts, but I think my mother in laws entire work- tons of people I didn't even know- sent gifts over with her and I was in pain and had a 104 fevers and I was just like AHHH.

So, what I ended up doing was, if the person came over and visited me aka close friends and family, I opened them and thanked them in person. If they sent a gift, then I sent a thank you so they would know I received it. I also tended to send follow up texts etc to close friends and family if the baby wore the clothes or something like that- I would take a picture.

I know maybe that is not the exact thing you are supposed to do- but I always bring a gift and food when I visit close friends and I have never got a post baby thank you note, nor have I ever minded at all. It's a busy and sleep deprived time!

  • In order to avoid being overwhelmed, I literally wrote and and mailed each post baby thank you card within a day of receiving the gifts. This kept them to 1-2 cards/day, which was very manageable.

This is what I do, though I think people are understanding if it takes a bit longer. I'd also prioritize and send cards sooner for gifts received through the mail so the sender knows they were received.
