How would you pronounce this name?

edited March 2014 in Baby Names
I know results will probably be skewed on this board because name nerds are more likely to be familiar with this name than Average Joe, but whatever.

Would you know how to correctly pronounce the name Ewan? Would your guess change if it was spelled Euan?

Both are legit spellings...Euan is actually ranked higher in Scotland, where the name is from. I'll put the correct pronunciation in the comments.

  • I've always heard it as You-in.
  • Like PP said...You-in like Ewan McGregor.  I LOVE the name Ewan!  I do not like the look of the 'Euan' spelling though.

  • I've only heard it as You-in. I like the Ewan spelling more than Euan, but maybe that's because I'm more familiar with it. Would people be more likely to mispronounce one over the other, you think?

  • Because of Ewan McGregor, I think if it's spelled Ewan people will pronounce it correctly.

That's what I had been thinking...but when I mentioned the name and spelling, a few people have said "Oh, I always thought it was Ew-in McGregor!" Not sure if this is a common thought or if I have just spoken to the wrong people.

Same for me. I think many people will know how to say this name actually bc of the actor.

  • I like the Ewan spelling better, bit the only baby I know with this name IRL spells it Euan so I am familiar with both.
  • I much prefer Ewan over Euan.

  • I much prefer Ewan and I think it will be more recognizable to people in the States, mainly because of the actor mentioned above. I still think there is a good chance of it being butchered sometimes, but easily corrected. I'd use it anyways, I love Ewan!

  • I would stick with Ewan, which is simple and common enough.

I'm not sure where in Canada you are, but Euan to me looks more like a misspelling/creative spelling of the Vietnamese Yeun or Chinese Yuan. Yeun is fairly common girl's name around here.

Oh, I didn't think of that! I'm on the east coast of Canada where just about everyone has Irish/Scottish heritage...the Mcs and the Macs get their own section of the phonebook here, apart from the Ms :)
