STM...baby clothes opinion

Hey guys! I had my shower on Sunday and was blessed with a bunch of clothes for our little guy...I was so surprised because I was told boys don't tend to get much clothes!

Most of it ( and I mean a lot!) is 6-9 m or 6-12 m, with a good amount of 0-3 m.

My amazing DH is taking me outlet shopping this weekend and id like to pick up some stuff to fill in the other missing months 3-6 m, 9 m and 12 m.

Is there one stage most babies stay in longer or does it really depend on baby?

Thanks ladies :)

  • I think it greatly depends on the baby. I would be careful about buying too far out though, since you don't know how fast your child will grow. DD was always pretty much in a size up for the first 9 months (wearing 6 month clothes at 3 months), but then she took off and we had to buy her a whole 2nd summer wardrobe last year because she had a huge growth spurt. She is now 18 months wearing 2T-3T and is finally starting to slow down! :) She has always been greater than 95% for height and weight though, so maybe my experience is not typical.

  • Definitely depends on the baby!  My DS is almost 20 months old and still wears mostly 12 month clothes, I had bought him summer stuff early on thinking he would be in it last summer, but most of it has never been worn.

  • Depends on the baby so I'd caution you to be careful as we tried to buy clothes too far ahead and they ended up being the wrong season (like, long-sleeved shirts and pants in summer) and pretty useless. I don't know if it's typical but my son was in the next size up a month early (like in 6-9 at 5 months) for a long time, then it slowed down at about a year but for a while now he's consistently worn a bigger size in tops than in bottoms. Just depends on the kid.

  • I agree in being cautious about buying too much stuff ahead. DD never fit in the clothes for her age, so I would avoid buying anything big that is seasonal. Things that can be used regardless of season like PJs would be safest.

Also, it took having a baby to realize what I did and did not like for clothing a baby.

can you return some of the clothing from the shower toward purchasing other baby items??

  • It depends so heavily on the baby. My 18m old still wears 9m clothes. Never saw that one coming. I used to buy ahead but I quit because she has so many clothes that are inappropriate for seasons and I end up buying new stuff.
I would turn any very summer or very winter clothes into gift cards and save them until LO stats to move into those sizes. It'll also give you a chance to figure what brands fit your LO best and what types of clothes you like for them. Shirts over onsies, sets or separates, etc.

  • Depends on the baby and honestly, I'd probably return most of the stuff and stick with getting 0-3 and some NB stuff in exchange.  You just never know.  My daughter moved up in sizes pretty much right along with the ages on the tags, but my friends son who is 9 months old is wearing 12-18 month stuff.

  • I would wait and just buy some NB and 0-3 month stuff for now. It's totally and completely dependant on the baby how much and when they grow. I've bought basics ahead of time, though (leggings and onesies) since DD wears those year round, pretty much.

  • Honestly, make sure you have enough NB-6 months and wait on the rest. Keep the tags on your gift items until baby is ready to use them. Baby may surprise you with growth spurts (or lack thereof) and with tags items are returnable if they are the wrong season... or at least worth more on the resale market.

  • Depends on the baby. My son was wearing 18 month size by 9 months but then his growth slowed way down and he lived in 18 month size until 2.5. Now he's small for his age. Better to wait and buy as you go.

  • Ditto all the others..... focus on NB and 0-3 months. Even the newborn stuff..... if he is born bigger he might not spend much time in the NB size...
  • Thanks ladies! I didn't get many gift receipts so I have no clue where lots of it came from. I do know I need some receiving blankets and socks as I didn't get any! The pj idea is great and maybe I'll pick up a couple if the deals are good :)

  • FTM. I think it's great that people didn't overload you on newborn stuff. Some babies don't even fit in newborn when they're born or they grow out of it in the first two weeks. Now you can grab a few newborn things and whatever you are lacking in 0-3 and 3-6.

I wouldn't buy too far ahead. I did grab a few outfits on clearance that were 6/9 months winter outfits because he will fit in them at some point this coming winter. Other than that I didn't want to guess sizing. Plenty of kids are big or small for their age.
  • What brands are the clothes? We can probably help figure out where you can take it. Like Carter's, any Carter's store will take stuff back with no receipt. Kohls, BRU and BBB also sell their stuff.

If you post the brands we can probably tell you. Or at least I can. I do enough shopping to have a decent handle on where things come from. ;)

  • I don't remember a particular size of clothes that DS1 was in a long time, but he did wear size1 diapers for a while (and 5 and 6).

As for clothes, I think it depends on the climate of where you live. Living in the southwest US, I've never had an issue buying sizes ahead of time, and that includes having a child being at the lower and higher extremes of size throughout his babyhood. I think our weather is mild enough (that includes 110F+ summers) that I've been able to use both long sleeves in the summer and short sleeves during winter. Maybe airconditioning makes it work....
