EBFing a toddler while working FT

My daughter is turning 1 in May. I currently pump 4 times during the day and she nurses 2-3/day as well as multiple times over night most nights (co-sleep). I am planning to continue to EBF her until at least 18 months but I am trying to figure out if I will still need to pump so many times at work. I would love to continue our BFing relationship until she weans herself so I do not want to risk ruining my supply.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts? I am not even sure how often the average 1-2 year old nurses during the day since she still wants to nurse every 2-3 hours at 9.5 months. TIA

  • yes, you can definitely stop pumping at work at 1 year and still BF while you are at home with your LO!

you will want to gradually decrease the number of pumping sessions per day until you're down to 1.

i was doing 1 pumping session a day when DS was 1 year, and i stopped pumping when he was about 14 months. i was a little engorged for 1 day, and had to pump for a minute or two to relieve the discomfort. by the next day i was fine. we are still nursing and DS is now 19 months. he nurses in the morning, after work, and in the evening, and sometimes during the night (we also bedshare). on the weekends, he will nurse maybe an extra 1 or 2 times during the day.

  • Thanks. That is very good news and super encouraging!

  • I slowly started decreasing the number of times I pumped once my son hit 14 months.  By 18 months, I no longer pumped at work.  I was able to nurse him in the mornings, after school, at bedtime and once overnight.  On the weekends, he also nursed at nap time.  I never had any issues and was able to keep up the same schedule until he got older and we started to drop sessions.  Now that he is 3, and I am 12 weeks pregnant, my supply has finally dried up and I think that he will be completely weaned in the next month or so.  Obviously, if I had wanted to, I could have weaned him much earlier :)

  • I went to work full time when E was 13 months. Until then, I had nursed on demand and didn't really pump.

I pumped only once a day during my lunch (and one side in the morning), but that worked out since he didn't take much breastmilk from a cup at school. I nursed in the morning, nursed at 5, and nursed at bedtime, and for a few months nursed during the night. On the weekends, I didn't pump and just nursed on demand.

At 18 months, which was a couple days ago, I stopped pumping midday. He takes both sides in the morning nursing so I didn't really have to do anything to drop that pump. I just offered the breast instead of pumping it. He's now offered cow's milk at school (not because he needs milk; just because I'm not pumping to send breastmilk in, and milk is the dairy once or twice a day at school.). He still nurses at 5pm and bedtime. We'll have to see whether my weekend supply will keep up.

  • You can stop pumping at work and give her WCM while you're apart. With DD#1 I mixed BM with WCM, first 75/25, then 50/50, then 25/75 until she is one 100% WCM during the day.

  • Thanks again. And to the EBF - that is what I meant. Her only source of milk is BM. I was hoping to hold off on WCM for a little while yet but also was unsure how much she would need to drink after a year and if nursing 2-3x a day would be enough.
