Sleep Training?

So, I am trying to help my friend with some advice for her DS.  He is 14 months old, and she still has to rock him to sleep for up to 45 minutes, he often wakes up when she lies him down and she has to start over, ad he often wakes several times per night.  My DS sleep trained so easy at 6 months with simple CIO, one rough night and we were good.  I feel for her.  What should I recommend?  Ferber?  Another book?  She has tried to let him cry, but he doesn't slow down, so I think she needs a method with checks.  DS was never like that, he would always take little breaks, which made CIO easier because he was never getting himself so so worked up.

    I really liked the book The Sleep Easy Solution.  It is a CIO method, but the book gives lots of other options and addresses issues by age/developmental challenge (so for a 14 month old, separation anxiety, for example).  I went back to it many, many times over the first year or two with both kids

    We used Sleep Sense. It's a modified CIO. We've referred to the book several times for issues.

    This book, for sure. I give it out to all pregnant people I know. 
    I also love this book.  It's sectioned out really well, so you can jump around to the parts that applicable to what you're looking for if you don't have time to read the whole thing right away.  It's easy to read but thorough.

    Thanks everyone!  I gave her the book titles you recommended.  I definitley think he has reached an age where seperation anxiety is in play, which is making the process so much more difficult.  In addition she has a 2 1/2 year old and her husband is not always on the same page.  Hopefully having a book and a concrete plan will get him on board and consistent.

    At 14 months I would recommend Ferber.  But honestly extinction ala Weissbluth might be quicker.  If they are completely against any form of CIO then The No Cry Sleep Solution is worth checking out.  I read all three books with DS1.  I tried The No Cry Sleep Solution first and then went with Ferber.  I don't have the stomach for extinction training.

    I will say that when they get older the "checks" often make it worse. We had to abandon that with DD at 14 months and just let her cry. She cried for hours. Would fall asleep sitting up and then start all over again. The first night was awful but it got better each night.  It took us about 4 nights to get her down with no crying.

    This was much better than sitting by her crib for an hour+ every night though.

    I agree. We skipped checks after a while
