Crazy arms?

LO for the most part is pretty well tempered, we haven't had any temper tantrums or anything yet (knock on wood!). Lately after telling him no he flails his arms like crazy and occasionally hits. I don't know if he means to hit or if he's just showing his disappointment of being told no. I don't really know how to go about this though. It seems to be his way of showing his frustration. Any advice?

Re: Crazy arms?

  • DS does something similar although sometimes its pretty clear it was deliberate but either way we hold his hands, tell him "No hitting" and try to redirect him with his blankie or a book. If he takes a swat at one of his stuffed animals we don't worry about that. If he does something he knows he's not supposed to, when you catch him, he puts his hands behind his back and runs away so you can't slap his hands.

  • DD does the arm flail thing, which seems to be different from trying to actually make contact or hit.. Maybe I'm naive, but she doesn't seem to be hitting. It's more frustration. I usually let her flail a little, tell her I understand she doesn't like it, but you can't do xyz, then redirect if possible.
