3rd Trimester

what is it like?...

My weekly appointments start next week I'll be 36wks ..what can I expect? Does it hurt when the doctor "checks" ? Do they start checking for dilation this early? I have anxiety about this because some say it's painful and they bleed afterwords.. I guess I have to get used to it these few times because it'll be nothing compared to giving birth...spread eagle and pushing lol...

Re: what is it like?...

  • It's an internal exam. They were uncomfortable for me.

  • I'm 34w5d but I've been checked because I'm at risk for pre term. It doesn't hurt and I didn't have any bleeding. It is a little awkward lol, but it only takes like 5 seconds
  • Internals are uncomfortable but you don't have to have them.
  • I get checked every week now and it doesn't hurt, just uncomfortable like a Pap smear. It only takes 20 seconds or so. She tells me how soft, effaced and dilated I am. Anything will be slightly uncomfortable with forceful entry way up there haha

  • Ya my 2nd check was on Tuesday I can tell you it was uncomfortable... Didn't bleed at all and havnt in this pregnancy soo far. And I don't think you have to have it done every week like next week se said we could skip it .

  • Between this pregnancy and my last, I have had it done four times in the office.  Twice it hurt horribly.  I just got one this morning, and it hurt so badly that I actually almost said something.  The other two times it literally did not hurt at all. I think it really, really, really depends on who is doing it.  I think some doctors are a lot better at it than others.  If you haven't had any labor symptoms, I would not consent to it.  It isn't a big deal to say no.  My doctors just say, "Do you want me to check?" and a few of the times I have just said, "Not today."
  • I got checked at my last appointment for the first time and it was nbd for me. Felt exactly like a pelvic exam from first tri, so it wasn't like it was fun but it didn't hurt. No bleeding or anything, but then again I never bleed after an exam.

Mine hurt really bad last time, but my cervix was really high. I didn't bleed at all. You can decline them, but I wanted to know how dilated/effaced I was (even though I know that means nothing).

  • I'm not getting checked at all.  The information isn't really helpful or meaningful so why bother?  It seems like needless pain and increased bacteria introduced to the area.
  • I have a posterior cervix and my baby's head is so low that my OB had to reach around her head and struggles to reach my cervix everytime. It hurts like a b*tch!!! She said once my cervix shifts it won't be as uncomfortable.

  • Opt out of them, its not necessary and they mean nothing... And they can be uncomfortable or dissapointing if you are hoping for progress thinking it will mean baby is soon to arrive...
Better to just wait it out!

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

    Baby Dust To All!!!

  • My first one did not hurt but she said she was taking it easy on me because she didn't want to send me into labor. I have opted out since then because I want to make it to 40 weeks and I don't want to get my hopes or get frustrated by how dilated I am.

  • I had my first done at 38 weeks.  It was painful enough that I'll be declining future checks.

  • Very good to know that I can skip!.. I know this week my 36wk appt they have to check for that maternal group b I think it's called..but after that I'll have weekly checks and I could be dilated one cm for a week or two right so there's no reason to check. Heck I cant see down there anymore lol who knows what's going on..
  • Mine didn't hurt.  My dr and I had discussed the reasons for checking starting at 36 weeks when she did my GBS test (which was way more uncomfortable) and I suspect we will check again close to 40 weeks on Tuesday.  They are likely not necessary for you if you're not in to it, as most everyone has said.
  • I'm on the skip team. My OB with my first and my midwife with my second and this one don't bother to check until after your due date anyway if at all and it is always optional.
