Birthday party smash cake question

I ordered J's birthday cake today from the grocery store bakery - they give us a free smash cake, but i need a second one because I'm doing a photo sesh later.

Anyway- the bakery wanted to charge us a crazy amount for the extra tiny cake, so I thought I'd just make one.

Any SIMPLE recipes / instructions to share?  I will just frost it in white with red piping like a baseball.  I'm a great cook but not much of a baker...so simplicity is key.  Do I just bake a normal cake and then use cookie cutters to cut out rounds and stack them and frost? Any other suggestions??

What flavor cake do you want? I might have a good recipe.
I'd love it.  I'm not that concerned with flavor as long as it is easy and cute!  Where'd you get the 4 inch cake pans? I didn't even know those existed!

Amazon for the pans. Fat daddio is the brand. The four inch is pretty small. Bigger than a cupcake but smaller than a lot of the pictures of smash cakes I've seen on the bump. They make pans in just about every size though. I'll look through my recipes tonight when everyone is in bed.
Thanks dear!  I am looking at them on Amazon as I type!  Great solution - much easier than cutting, I agree! Any tips on baking temp / time for such a tiny little cake (I suppose the recipe will tell me that, huh?)

  • I thought about using a mammoth muffin tin for the smash cake but that may be too small huh?

I was just looking for pans at joann fabrics and they didn't have the 6" ones I was looking for but they did have a set of three 4" pans, if you wanted to see something in a store.
I just ordered two 5 inch pans by the brand that @knitfaced suggested... amazon... $4 each... saves me a trip!

Awesome! I waited until the last minute and didn't have time to order online... Then my cake looked like shit anyway so I ended up calling a local bakery the day of her pictures and ordering a cake anyway. And it was only $7.99 and I spent more than that on all the paraphernalia to make the damn thing.... Lesson learned!
See, that's what I wanted to do -- $7.99 is totally reasonable. But the bakery where I bought the cake for the party wanted something insane like $20 for a 6 inch round, and that's ridiculous to me, especially because i think I need two (one for the party, one for his photo session)... so dumb.  I'll try to make them and hope for the best.

Hmmm,i can't bring myself to shop at WM but maybe I should check Target. I was surprised that they wanted so much for it at the bakery.

Oh yeah - Target gal... duh!! Target is our 1st choice too. Our wedding cupcakes were from Target - DE-lish! I'm sure they're reasonable for the smash cakes. I know our cupcakes were inexpensive.

  • If you want a dome cake use a Pyrex bowl. They are oven safe and round. I did this years ago for my birthday and made a ladybug. I think the shape would be perfect for a baseball.
Also look at your dishes. I have lots of oven safe dishes. Soup bowls glass mixing bowls large muffin tins as long as it's oven safe you should be good to go.

Mind blown! I had no idea they have bakeries either! We have groceries in ours, and the cart escalator (which is pretty cool), but I don't think we have any super targets in Michigan. :(
You probably have what is internally called a pFresh store (prototype Fresh)... small grocery assortment, urban setting... meant for people to grab a few grocery items, but not a full grocery department!

We barely even have target where I live in canada and it's nowhere NEAR the same as it is in the states! No bakeries or super targets!
Ahhhh, but at least you have one now, right?  We're still figuring out canada... hasn't really gone as planned.

  • Ramekins can be a cheaper way of getting smaller cake sizes too, and they tend to be widely available without having to order.

Thank you - I also thought of pyrex as well.  so if I can't get what I want at Target, I'll just use my pyrex mixing bowls!

@jss1002 Had to tell you that apparently we are getting a Starbucks in our Target next year. Can't wait! I am sad that we will not be a pFresh store, but we are getting some more refrigerated cases at least.

What size would you guys suggest for a smash cake 4 or 6inch? I can't believe I'm actually going to try baking a cake. I'm just setting myself up for failure at this point.
If by "baking a cake" you mean the boxed kind, then I am baking one, which I hope can't result in too much of a failure.  My plan is to use the box and put half the mix in the 4 inch pan and the rest in a cup cake form.  I was gong to do a simple mickey mouse head with 1 big oreo and 2 mini oreos on each one and call it a day :)

I first read this as 4 inch fat dildo...

Had I been bumping from my phone, that would have been my luck with auto-correct...although I would be a little worried about myself, if dildo was one of my 1st auto correct defaults :)

@jdubb13 I have the 6" pans and it's about what you see in a lot of pictures of smash cakes... It's the perfect size for pictures, but realistically my 3-layer 6" smash cake is HUGE for Rhys. Like it fed 12  adults.

No not the box kind. I'm using a recipe that uses bananas and applesauce instead of sugar so I have no idea how it will turn out.
My oldest played around in the cake and took maybe 1 lick and barely half a bite of her cake, so I wouldn't stress too much about how it turns out :)

My thoughts exactly. We have a grocery but it's not a full Super Target. I feel completely ripped off right now.

I was just going to use a mix unless @knitfaced recipe looked insanely easy.
Now I'm going to go even more insanely easy and try for Target. :-)

  • @jss1002 here is a recipe I have been making since I was about 10 years old...I swear its no fail...and the frosting sets up well too.  (Sorry I have posted this a few times but its so easy and good!)

Probably need to double the cake recipe as its for one 9x9:

The frosting you maybe okay if you are using 5 inch pans.  I would suggest using room temp butter and not melting in microwave:
