Red private areas

Ds is a hard sleeper, and sometimes if he doesn't nap all day if were out and about, he'll crash for the night around 5/530. Well last night he laid down around 4 because he was so tired, and I didn't think anything of it Bc that's normal for him. Well he just woke up around 530 screaming hard so dh went in to calm him down, pretty sure he just had a bad dream. But as he was changing his diaper, his boy parts and all on his inner thighs where the diaper lays was blood red, almost looked like welts were forming. And everytime you would wipe it he'd scream. Well I put a bunch of cornstarch on it put his diaper back on and he went back to sleep fine, now im just concered of why it's so red. There's been times before he's slept longer and it's never done that. Is it something I need to call the doctors office when it opens or something I just should watch and see what happens.

Re: Red private areas

  • Could be a horrible diaper rash. That happened to dd before. We used baby powder with corn starch and put Vaseline on the welt looking things every diaper change. We also didn't let her sit in a dirty diaper too long so that she stayed dry longer. I hope your LO feels better soon!

  • Penaten or whatever it's called really helps. DS is a chubby baby so sometimes we miss some moisture in his rolls after bath time.
  • I'm starting to think it's just a bad diaper rash he has a blister on his boy parts and that wasn't there this morning when he woke up. So I wiped him down with a wipe,& put a bunch of vaslien on it. Trying to call the doctor to make sure it's nothing he needs to be seen for, but of course their line is busy. :P
  • Stop using wipes only use a wet cloth. With DD the wipes, except the Huggies natural ones, make it worse once she has it. We put buttpaste and aquaphor in it and let her go diaper free for a while.

  • it might be a yeast diaper rash if you are seeing welts. You can google yeast diaper rash and find a treatment that sounds right for you all if thats the case.

Yeah those are the wipes we use. I'm just going to use a wet rag next time. I made a appointment with his doctor at 230 so hopefully he'll tell us something. He's acting normal other than when I change him he's uncomfortable I was thinking about giving him a bath and maybe it would relax him but then I thought I'd wait till after the doctor Bc it might hurt him a little.
  • I've heard a bath with baking soda can help.

Sounds like you're getting good advice. Poor guy I hope it clears up soon!
I know when DD has had some bad diaper rash, we've let her go naked from the waste down for a while and it seems to help and make her more comfortable
  • Huggies wipes are one of the several that contain a certain type of chemical or preservative (the name eludes me) that has been known to cause rashes. I hadn't used Huggies wipes on my son for a long time, and my mom unknowingly used them on him recently and his anus and surrounding skin were beet red. It could've been a coincidence, but I'm not using them again. I would definitely quit using wipes all together for now and start using a different brand of wipes once his rash clears up.

  • He had really acidic pee that sat too long. This happened to my DD once as well.

I put on some medicated cornstarch just to soak up any last moisture and then covered that with an all-natural diaper (I went out and bought these just for this case to avoid any chemical contact). Once the redness died down a little, I used plain water to pat her down and then smeared on the paste.

The redness will decrease but he will have a nasty rash for a few days.

  • When DS had a yeast infection pedi told us to use monistat cream on it and it cleared it right up.  Next time you could just try that instead of getting a Rx.  It was the lowest strength,1%.
  • DD doesn't get diaper rash.  She gets diaper rash from HELL every once in awhile and gets those red nasty welts.  Use alcohol free wipes (they sell them at Walmart) or just wet wash clothes to clean him up.  DDs pedi gave us stuff called Calmoseptine that is absolutely amazing.  It is not prescription but you have to call around to find it.  I think Walgreens carries it but I can't remember.  The first time DD got it she had some kind of stomach virus and was red from her girly parts all the way to the top of her crack.  It was AWFUL and I wanted to cry every time I had to change her diaper.  Within 12 hours the Calmoseptine had her looking almost normal.
