*update* 25-month-old behavioral therapy

Whoa.  That thread got a little crazy...not really sure what happened there since I stopped reading after a page or two even though I was the OP.

To answer some questions:
-Of course I am listening to daycare teachers as they definitely are doing their job and see my son for many hours every day.  (Funny enough, I do have a degree in social work and elementary education as well as my master's degree in education, so I believe his teachers, or at least the center director should be counted as an "expert".)
-In Illinois where we live the state has 45 days to set up an observation/evaluation after it's been requested.
-If my son scores 30% or lower in specific developmental areas, then he would receive services (paid by the state).  If he scores higher, DC wants us to seek outside services.
-I am, however, a bit concerned that they only thing listed on the actual paperwork has to do with his biting (which, really, I'm not that concerned about--I know when and why he does it.)  I was a little more concerned about his attention span and fixation because I would want these to be treated as early as possible if there are real issues.
-As far as his attention and fixation goes, I'm sure what DC has observed is not in line with a "normal" two-year-old; however, to answer someone's question, he definitely does move on after being distracted or after a minute or two of being upset.  As for sitting still, he'll sit still to eat, but then wants to get up.  Oddly enough, DC did tell me that he'll sit on his own in timeout for five minutes at a time, which seems to contradict what they said about him not sitting still at other times (again, not that I don't believe them, I'm just curious what's going on with him in these situations).  I guess we'll see what the evaluation says.

Thanks again for your responses.

  • Specific evaluator who comes to his DC to observe him there.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm okay with that.  I just want to make sure the issues of his attention are not glossed over (if they really are issues).  I don't want this to be all about biting, but it feels like that is what the DC is most concerned about.  Again, I already know why he bites.

I would get a private eval.  You can start by speaking to your pedi.

ETA:  Also, in this thread, I hear of nothing that sounds out of the norm and I am not sure if I am reading correctly but are they putting him in time out?  That is NOT ok.  Is this eval through the program or through Early Intervention?
