Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep training

Anyone do this yet with success? I was reading up over the weekend. I am literally dreaming of this when I am up at night with a screaming baby. As soon as we get through our current night time gas issues I am going to take the plunge. Any suggestions as to how to do it with a 2 year old sleeping next door? We already run sound machines!

Re: Sleep training

  • Totally depends what style of sleep training you want to do, research what type your most comfortable with and then begin it's usually just a few days of the baby getting the hang of it and the new routine and then smooth sailing, don't have any advice about the 2 year old though might be a few rougher nights but it will get better !

I have no idea how old your baby is. You have a two year-old according to your post. But what age is the younger child?

You do know you're on the 3 - 6 month board. Sleep training should not begin until 6 months. If you're going to use a very gentle, tear free method like No Cry Sleep Solution you can start at 4 months. I don't see a point in doing it at that age. I'm not sure that the plan is enough to overcome the 4 MW and there is nothing that will convince my LO to go back to sleep when he is waking up hungry, which is still perfectly normal at this point.

My son is 4 months old. From what I had been reading I thought that was the appropriate age to start.

4 months is a bit too young. What I would suggest doing for now is to pay attention to LO's sleep patterns. What time they nap, for how long, how many times, and when do they typically go to sleep for the night. They usually fall into their own rhythm. If they don't, you can somewhat get an idea simply by paying attention and keeping track of their sleep patterns. Once they are the right age to start sleep training, it is possible to alter the schedule, but to have a true schedule may not happen until later on.

  • We didn't do a formal method of sleep training, nor did we let him CIO, but around 3.5 / 4 months we started working on putting him down awake and letting him develop self soothing skills.  Prior to this we were basically rocking him to sleep all the time, and he was starting to wake up after being placed in his crib.  We knew it was important to get him comfortable with going into his crib drowsy but awake.  I personally feel that about 3.5 - 4 months is a very good time to do this.  We had one night where he cried for a few minutes (like less than 10 minutes) and from then on, he went down awake relatively easily.

  • My little one is 5.5 months today and was sleeping perfect at 10 weeks.  Then a month ago he started waking every 20-40 minutes for the paci all night.  I tried everything and multiple pediatricians/friends/books/websites told me it was okay to let him cry for a bit in his crib, then go in and reassure every 5, 10, 15 min.  I tried that and it made it worse.  I bought the book Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and got some ideas.  I started feeding him, rocking and reading a book around 7 p.m. and then put him to bed awake.  The first night he cried for about 15 minutes and then went to sleep.  Then woke up four hours later and did the same thing.  The second night he's waking more but only cries for about 5 minutes.  Before starting this, I tried feeding/rocking/changing and usually h just wants his paci but can't keep it in on his own.  Doc said he may have a paci association with sleep and thinks he needs it to sleep.  I don't think I could have donelonger than 30 minutes of the crying at this point and fortunately that wasn't an issue.  I know it's not for everyone but I really tried so many different things.  Good luck with whatever method works for you.
  • Mine is 3 months, I just try to keep everything consistant.  She pretty much goes down at the same time every night but some nights takes an extra bottle or stays up a little longer.

  • @JoeLies I think this is totally acceptable.  The freak out period will most likely fade out, that what we've experienced.  Occasionally, if he's really tired and overstimulated, he will cry when going down, but it doesn't last long most times.  If he's really screaming, we go in to sooth him - usually he needs to burp or something and then calms down.  GL!

And for various PP, the 4MW phase was seriously painful with the frequency of wake ups, but we kept trying to do the same and eventually he got back to better sleep patterns.  We still get up with some frequency b/c he is EBF and a big eater.  But he does go back down nicely most times.

I also like Health Sleep Habits Happy Child.  GL everyone.
