Molars

What have your experiences been with first molars? DD has been "off" for about a week (fever for two days, oddly clingy, often will lose it for no obvious reason, decreased appetite). It started when I could feel the first of her top molars poke through and the second one came a few days later, so I've been blaming everything on her teeth, but now I'm wondering if something else is wrong too.

Re: Molars

  • I'm also very interested to hear what everyone's molar experiences have been. Sam's been a wreck for a week - constant runny nose, cranky beyond belief, disrupted sleep…and I keep saying it's his molars. Nothing yet. Come on!!!

I just want to get this over with.

  • Ainsley got hers just after her birthday. They all came in within a month or so. She had a cold, and we moved in the middle of getting molars, so it is hard to say if all her symptoms were molar related. I think sometimes cold symptoms are actually caused by teething and not really a cold, but that is just my opinion. She was definitely getting up more at night, clingy, fussy and didn't want to eat as much. She has always been a pretty easy teether though, so I actually thought it would be worse than it was. I hope they all come in at once for your LO! Get it all over with at one time.
  • Oh, she also had a lot of swelling in her gums before her teeth broke through. One side in particular was so swollen we took her to the dentist earlier than we planned to, just to make sure it was actually a molar and not something else.
  • DD has been extra clingy and she recently had three molars come in, but I think it's a combination of getting sick and her molars. We have all pretty much been sick more often than not since November. I'm hoping April brings better health. The teeth just push over things over the edge. She refuses to use a teether and has been chewing on her fingers.

I may also be over thinking this but it seems like DD has recently become more aware of strangers and more hesitant in new places and situations. I'm thinking that may have more to do with her being clingy than her teeth. She is still very outgoing, but less so in the last month or so. She tends to stay closer to me.

  • Molars have been horrible! His top 2 have poked through and with that came constant night waking, clingyness, extremely emotional, low fever, fluid in his left ear, rash on his hiney and so much poop, for about 3 or 4 days and then things got better! Now the bottom 2 are poking through and it's the same thing but worse. I think the extra drool caused his ear infection that he has now. He's not eating much and drinking even less.
I would keep an eye on LO's ears because her symptoms seem similar to my LO's. I think his ears bothered him more than his teeth or it's just a coincidence that they both occurred at the same time.
  • Glad to know Elli hasn't been the only one! She was cranky and off for about a week, week and a half. She had her normal teething symptoms (runny nose, clingy, low appetite, picky) but they were relatively mild and seemed to last so long! Next thing I know wham molar. So she has one at the bottom and one on the opposite side on the top.

  • I've looked and felt in L's mouth, but I can't find any physical signs of any teeth coming in (I couldn't last time either until they were just there), but she has all the symptoms you girls are facing!

She's clingy, fussy, hasn't eaten more than a few bites of anything since Friday, drooly (and subsequently rashy), and miserable. I sure hope a tooth or two pops up soon because I feel miserable for my little hot mess!

  • @bmerr - She hit 103 on Tuesday while she was at daycare.  It came down some (99/100) with Tylenol, but was back up to about 103.2 on Wednesday morning when she got up.  We kept her comfortable with Tylenol all day, and her fever broke later in the day.

  • This all describes DS to a T the last few days, right down to the temperatures. We've been using Ibuprofen when it gets above 103 but otherwise just stripping him down to diaper/pants and letting him keep going. We let him sleep with us when he doesn't feel good and I've noticed the last couple nights he'll come to our bed with a fever but he always seems to "sweat" it out since he's snuggled between us & even pulls the comforter to his chin.

  • I'm going through this too! I hope it ends soon!

  • DD had her 15 month well check on Monday and the pedi saw molars about to pop. I just felt 2 last night that are almost through the surface. She was a mess last week, but that is always how she is when new teeth are coming (she's always whiny with cold like symptoms a week or two before).
  • DD just had three molars cut at once. She's been sleeping a lot more than usual (although her nighttime sleep is somewhat disrupted), very clingy at times, runny nose and some coughing. Oh, and a few epic tantrums.
