Best way to keep LO out of the kitchen garbage?

We have a nice stainless steel kitchen garbage with a foot pedal. As nice as it is for DD to clean up, she is constantly lifting the lid to the garbage to throw things away.  I don't like her touching the lid and sometimes she gets her fingers stuck and since it's a heavy stainless steel lid, it can hurt her.  We don't have room to put it somewhere else, so I am wondering if any of you have suggestions on a different garbage can or baby proof option.  I've heard of similar garbage cans that have a latch so adults can use the pedal, but kids can't lift the lid, but I can't figure out where to find those.

  • We use these. We keep them unlatched when she's asleep. We actually have them on pretty much everything in the house.

  • We have a recycle can right next to our garbage that doesn't have a lid (same can just no lid) - and she puts everything in there (this does create other issues... but I digress) - other parents I know that had this issue used the latches PP listed :)

This is what I was going to suggest too... these are really nice!
  • @Bookelly, I've never seem these. Very cool.

@Crene84, we have a really nice garbage can that just has a latch on it already and when we throw something away we just re-latch it after. It has worked for us so far.

  • Our garbage can is in a little open pantry area & we have my kitchen aid mixer in the box, which weighs a million lbs, blocking off the garbage can. Improvisation at its best.

  • Our Simple Human pails have the latch built in. Expensive, but I always use the BB&B coupons that come in the mail.

  • We don't have a garbage can becuase our dog fixates on it. We keep a grocery bag on the outside of a cabinet door and it gets taken out every.damn.day. L loves it because she can throw things out, but doesn't seem to bother it otherwise.
