Breastfeeding

all my frozen milk is spoiled :*(

i really don't understand... suddenly everything in my freezer stash has gone bad.  every single bag i defrost smells funny.  many of them are veryyy sour, all of them don't smell great.  i gave them to my 8.5 month old last week not thinking much of it and she got a stomach ache by the weekend :( even some stuff from december and january is spoiled or not smelling great.  the other day the babysitter said she was refusing her bottles, even spitting some milk out, until she gave her milk from a few days ago, then she sucked it right down.  i am at a complete loss, and devasted/feeling like a failure because i will now need to supplement with formula (i only pump once at work while baby gets 2 bottles). i used to pump in the middle of the night but recently (aka finally) stopped and don't want to go back to that.  anyway, i am just wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this or if anyone has any kind of idea what might have happened.  also - the frozen bags have circles on them, perhaps the fat separated or something, but i was wondering if that is normal. if anyone has a close up picture of their frozen milk so i could compare lol I'm just curious to see if mine looked the same.  no idea if that has anything to do with it or what. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

If it is just lipase and not actually bad, you could try donating to a milk bank. They process all the milk and it gets mixed with other donated milk and is often fed to NICU babies via tube feed so the taste doesn't matter :) it's better then dumping all that hard earned milk!

  • My first thought is what AmyG said... That your freezer thawed then refrozen without you knowing. We do the ice cube trick because we're prone to winter power outages and it tells us how much the freezer thawed, or if it went out on vacation, etc.

  • This exact thing happened to me too. It was heartbreaking. I have since started to scald my milk that I'm going to save and my daughter doesn't mind it now. It really isn't very hard to do once you get the hang of it. I second the kellymom idea. Check that out. Also, this video helped me.

    Good Luck!
  • I am so incredibly sorry this happened. Were other items in the freezer showing signs of partial thaw? If you aren't sure if its spoilage or lipase, I'm not sure I'd risk donation, especially if you think it made your baby sick. But maybe there is a way to test. It seems strange that excess lipase would just be noticed this far in. I have heard it can get worse the longer the milk is in storage, however. While frozen milk is a good, fresh milk is better. Is supplemting with formula is distressing to you, is it possible to add pumping sessions at work or adding back motn? It stinks getting up at night to pump, but its not forever.
