29 weeks measuring small in the 4th percentile.

Does anyone have experience with measuring small? My dr wants to do weekly ulstrasounds and appts. I'm scared. They say I'm only measuring at. 27 weeks and I should be 29.

Re: 29 weeks measuring small in the 4th percentile.

  • No experience but sending good vibes. Hope your little one contenues growing. I work for an OB and they usually just induce the mommas at 36 weeks but I know every case is different.

  • Thank you for linking the thread. I am currently scheduled for weekly appts ultrasounds and a scan in 3 weeks. I'm just so afraid right now.
  • I'm measuring small too, my dr wants to check me this week and then do an ultra sound to double check everything. She told me not to be too concerned though, it might be just because I'm tall and carrying very very low. Sending good thoughts!
  • My MW said being off up to two weeks was normal.

  • I measured small my entire pregnancy with DD and am measuring small again with this one (last appoint I was measuring 2 weeks behind). DD was on the smaller side at 6lbs 14oz born at 42 weeks. The Dr. knows my history and will keep an eye on it but just said that I probably just bake smaller babies.

  • I had my 28 week appt today and LO is measuring at 26 weeks. We are now starting ultrasounds every two weeks to keep an eye on LOs growth.

  • Thanks ladies! I already made the mistake of googling and now I'm laying in bed freaking out. Should I try to eat more? Exercise less? I am small framed at 5"2 started at 100lb and have only gained 12 pounds so far this pregnancy at 29 weeks. I eat about 2000 calories a day and exercise daily.
  • My sister's baby was in the 6th percentile at the anatomy scan and was just born a whopping almost-8 lbs (and she was born a week early)! I don't think that ultrasounds can give you 100% accuracy with weight, so I wouldn't worry too much.

I measured small all through my pregnancy with DS. Had lots of ultrasounds because of it.
Are you quite athletic or physically fit? It may just be that your abs are holding baby in more. I wasn't super physical, but I did lots of yoga and had some muscles.

DS was born at 6lbs 13oz (went into labor on his EDD) and he grew very quickly and is now (at nearly 21 months) in the 83rd percentile for height and weight.
  • I am pretty athletic and have a strong core. All of your comments are making me feel so much better. I will just relax and hopefully she continues to grow in the next few weeks.
  • All of the comments are quite interesting.  Similar to @WTFISUP my Dr. told me that measuring two weeks small was okay.  She wasn't concerned at all.  I am 5'9 and haven't had any other issues.

To hear that others are getting weekly scans makes we wonder.  I will follow up with my next appointment.

  • I just want to reiterate the above that measuring off by fundal height is completely different then measuring off by ultrasound.

With my last pregnancy I was measuring ahead by fundal height, enough that my Ob was concerned and we moved up my AS. Well DD was spot on, and stayed that was despite my fundus measuring 34 weeks at 30 weeks.

Combinations of abdominal musculature, height and build can effect fundal height and mean nothing. Other things like amount of amniotic fluid, baby size, and, as in my case, fibroids, also have an effect and may or may not be significant.

Take a breath. Don't google. And you'll know more at your next appointment and scan.

  • I measured small with my first pregnancy but not until the end. By small I'm referring to fundal height. I had u/s at 6,12,16, and 18 weeks. My fundal height measured small towards the end...it started to become a concern around 36 wks and it never increased after that.

My doctor suspected low fluid as a possibility. I had u/s in the last weeks to monitor my fluid levels. It resulted in my doctor only letting me go to 41 weeks and I was induced due to low fluid because he did not feel comfortable letting me go another week.

I think as long as your doctors are on top of it you should be ok!! Good luck!

  • My doctor is monitoring every 2 weeks because my dating scan and A/S were within the correct measurements but now, LO is not.

My biggest concern is they say it is one of two things.  The placenta not feeding the baby correctly or genetics.  DH is 6'1" and I am 5'7".  I was almost 9 lbs and my sisters have had a total of 7 babies, all over 8 lbs.  Since DH is adopted, we are not sure what his genetic background is but he was not a small baby either.

I'm just not Googling and praying all is ok and my body isn't failing my growing child.

  • My m/w said that at this point it's really common to be off by up to 2 weeks in either direction because babies do have growth spurts (I can actually tell when mine are happening - I get super hungry and I feel my skin stretching, it's weird.).  I wouldn't worry especially if they're monitoring you.
