Noticeable ridge on baby's head?

My LO has a noticeable ridge from temple to temple. I can feel his soft spot and its still open but I'm worried. I asked the pedi at the last apt and he said it was most likley from being so low in my pelvis, and was nothing to worry about, but you think it would have balanced out by now? I may just be worrying but any advice, experience would be appreciated. Maybe a second opinion? Or to early to tell?

Re: Noticeable ridge on baby's head?

  • Yes, we talked to our pediatrician about it and he told us the technical term for it and said it was totally normal. Our DS is on meds for his heart and they are a diuretic, so when he first went on them at 4 weeks he lost a bunch if water weight and the ridge became super noticeable and freaked us out.
BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

  • @L12541‌ thank you for your response. DH has a funky shaped head to thou, so that may play a role. But your pedi says the same as mine so maybe it is "normal". And I notice it off and on, sometimes barely noticeable.
  • My little guy has it too!

  • My daughter had some head trauma when ahe was born.  Little pockets of blood on her skull, it made her look like she had a butt on her head (or a peach if I am being charitable)  The ped said it could take 3-4 months to heal.  They have gotten less squishy.  So if it's a similar injury, you have my thoughts and empathy.

DD had this when she was born! it was so pronounced that I seriously thought something was wrong but both my ped and OB said that it's from baby being low and because there wasn't much room when she was being born so her head got more squished. they said it's completely normal and doesn't hurt her. she's 4 weeks now and I can't see it anymore but can just slightly still feel it. it looks so much worse than it is, don't worry!

ETA: no one ever gave me a timeline on when it would go away, they just said as her head grows and things move back into place it'll go away on its own.

  • DS had that when he was born, but it's cleared up now. I don't think it's crazy for you to keep pushing your doctor for more of an answer than "it's normal"

I'm mobile, so not sure how old he is? My twin nieces both had this and it resolved itself - but took almost 3 months if I'm remembering correctly.
They have perfectly smoothed out heads now at 21 months.

I agree with pp though that if it's tugging at your gut, and you're definitely worried, push for more information to help ease your worries.

  • Thank you all for your feedback. Now reading the other comments he was born at 35 weeks (lotsa contractions and PTL while hanging out nice and low in my pelvis so the molding of the head would make sense) but he is 10 weeks now and I guess I had just "assumed" (I know never assume w a baby) that it would correct itself by now.
I think I'll make a 3 month weight check and talk to doc about it again, and if not comfortable with his diagnosis get a 2nd. I have tried to stay off google but did read that an open soft spot is good and that it could just possibly be the shape of his head and nothing truly serious. Which is obviously what I'm hoping for.
  • This is a late response, but I noticed a ridge on the back of DS's (currently 5w5d) head.  I haven't asked the doctor about it, but assumed it was normal.  He was not early, 6 days late, but labor/delivery took a long time and he was vacuumed out.  He was also face up, so I don't know if position affects the location of the ridge.  I will definitely ask about it at his next appointment.  I do agree with PP keep pushing your doctor for a better answer than it's normal. maybe an explanation of what it is.
