Pregnancy after having Twins with PTL and IC - Impacts of cerclage?

I am probably (hopefully!) speaking to a small audience here - mothers of twins who had complications due to PTL and IC and were recommended to have a cerclage for a subsequent pregnancy.  My twin girls are 8.5 months old, born at 30 weeks following 6.5 weeks of complete hospital bedrest. Our doctor said there was no way to know if the IC was due to twins, but that I should get a cerclage for my next pregnancy just to be safe.

We conceived through IVF and have a single frozen embryo waiting to be transferred.  Since we have the opportunity to "plan" our next pregnancy (assuming success), we are attempting to get the best understanding possible regarding the impacts of a cerclage and potential bedrest, especially with two young children.

Our current plan is to pursue an embryo transfer sometime this summer which would mean our girls will be about 1.5 years when I will likely be put on modified bedrest.  I assume I won't be able to pick them up and won't be able to do many physical activities with them during that 5-6 month period.  Has anyone else gone through this?  Can you please share your experience?  Anyone who was on modified bedrest with young children, I would love to hear from you too!  Did you need extra help?  What were some unexpected impacts?

TIA!

I don't have other kids besides my twins but if I got pg again I would get a cerclage. I know enough IVFers who had difficult pregnancies every time that I would bet on that happening to me. With the twins I was on bedrest for 15w with PTL and IU. Not an IC but I only missed getting a cerclage because my cervical issues weren't discovered until just at the point when the procedure isn't recommended. The risk from the procedure is much smaller than what I perceive my risk of having issues is. GL!

  • With my first twin pg I lost my boys due to IC and PTL at 22w5d. This twin pg I had a preventative cerclage placed at 14w. I have had no bedrest whatsoever even though I anticipated being on it early. I'm now 32w and taking myself off work next week just because I'm so uncomfortable and my BP is creeping up. The only restrictions I've had is to not lift over 15lbs and pelvic rest which was lifted when I reached 32w.
