Birth controls?

So who went back onto birth control after pregnancy? I currently am a pumper so I know if you pp/breastfeed the there are still chances that you will get pregnant but We are willing to take that chance.. it happens it happens. I and DH don't really like condoms. So has anyone else just taking the chances with breastfeeding or did you decide to use some sort of birth control or what are you ladies doing?

Happy Hump Day!

I'm EBF and on the mini pill. I love it and got permission from my doctor yesterday to stay on it even when I stop BF. It doesn't give me migraines like combination pill.

  • I started taking the mini pill 6 weeks pp since I'm breastfeeding. I'm going to talk to my dr about starting back on regular birth control at my appt this afternoon for when I'm done breastfeeding in the next month or so. But I don't want anymore babies, so my situation is different than yours.
  • I couldn't get my IUD in fast enough, so no, I didn't chance it.

This may be a dumb question but are you more fertile after giving birth? I ask because there's a lot of birth control questions here. Really, we're doing pull and pray, which has worked for us for ten years. We want more kids, but probably not now. I just want to make sure I'm not ignorant to some important facts.

Also, I'm not having sex with my husband. So, that's probably birth control too.

Yup more fertile right after giving birth. Not sure for how long. I have 2 friends with twins from IVF who thought they wouldn't get pregnant again but were 3 months later.
  • I'm on the mini pill.  I'm not breastfeeding anymore but like PP said it doesn't give me migraines.  I know it's finicky with what time you need to take it and isn't as effective, but it's something.  Also, we aren't having that much sex with the stomach bug and being tired as fuck.  So, I'm not that concerned!
  • I got Mirena placed 8 weeks pp. I had been on the pill before getting pregnant but I didn't want to take something that would mess with BFing, plus I didn't want to have to remember to take a pill every day. So far I like it a lot.

I was.  Both my BFF and I got pregnant on the first cycle trying for #2.  I have friends who previously had to take fertility meds that got pregnant with no fertility intervention and much faster after their first pregnancies.

  • If we DTD, we're using condoms.... I was incharge of BC for 7 years so I figure its his turn...

That being said..we've only DTD once since LM was born...

We usually just fool around and are good with that

Combo BFing, mini pill, and being too tired to have sex. So far, so good. Also in terms of being more fertile PP, I hadn't known that we are super fertile right after going off of hormonal BC. Found that out firsthand.
Really?  I got KU the month after I stopped BC.

We were 2 months later since my doctor told me to wait a full cycle before trying.  She somehow didn't mention the uptick in fertility post-BCP until I came in to confirm my pregnancy.
Actually, I think we were 2 months too because they said the same thing to wait a cycle which we did.  They also failed to mention it to me.  I remember having this feeling of holy shit how did this not accidentally happen before now?!  Just because it happened so fast.  We were anticipating me maybe ending up getting pregnant by summer, just because I know it takes a while for some people.  Glad we were prepared (as much as you can be)!

Nope not a dumb question. My friend's fertility doc specifically said yes, after a birth you can be more prone to getting pregnant again. As he explained it, your body and hormones can "reset" after birth. Don't have research on it besides what one doc said, but I think it makes sense.

We use charting (I can recommend an excellent book if anyone is interested in trying it) and just avoid on the days when I'm close to ovulating/just after ovulation.  We're in the "if it happens it happens" camp, though we would like to wait until next year for it to happen.  We've successfully used charting to avoid pregnancy/get pregnant/avoid pregnancy for the last 3 years.

  • @kellykinns I am of the same mindset. I'm also on the Mirena. We want to wait two years until we pull that sucker out.

I decided I cannot be expected to take a pill everyday. I forgot to put socks on under my boots yesterday and I forgot to grab a coat on the way out the door today...I live in Ohio. Both articles of clothing are very important. Mommy brain is in full effect.
  • I have the Copper IUD. I wanted to avoid the hormones. I like my body to go through its cycle every month, but I didn't want to have to use condoms.

    This exactly.
  • DS is our last one so I had the Essure procedure done. It is nice because we do not have to worry about using condoms and I do not have to remember to take a pill every day.

And this is why I said tie my tubes as soon as I knew I had to have a c-section. Doctors gave us a 1% chance of conceiving on our own, but if there's one thing that can cure infertility it seems to be IVF twins.

  • I was on the mini pill for about 1.5 months but stopped because I swear it affected my supply. Anyone else?? I pump while I'm at work two days/week and after I stopped the pill I got about 4 more oz.

I really wanted to stay on it because 2u2 is no joke but we will do too-damn-tired-for-sex and pull/pray.

I am giving myself until Dec (god willing no BFP before then @-) ) and will decide on a third. If we're thru with two then I think I'm getting my tubes tied.

@mmm50‌ can you recommend that book???

Sigh. Please don't spread this myth. Spontaneous conception after infertility/ART pregnancies does happen, but it's fairly rare and very dependent on a couple's diagnosis. And it isn't defined by a certain number of months postpartum, either.

  • I had to give up breastfeeding sooner than I had intended but I went on the Mirena. However I'm of a different mindset. I want at least two years between kids and I don't want "whatever happens". If you're good with the gamble then why do anything? If you don't want to get pregnant but may want to in the near future I'd check out the mini pill. Breastfeeding is no promise you won't get your period. I got mine even in the short time I was breastfeeding.
All of this but I'm not using Mirena. I'm not a candidate due to severe endometriosis. Funny thing is, some evidence shows it is an effective treatment, other studies show it causes endometriosis. IUDs just aren't an option for me.

I see my OB next week and I'm pretty sure she'll want me back on Seasonique. That way I'm not having my period every month and less adhesions will be created. For now we're using condoms.

It's called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by @Justnooch.  My MW recommended it to me.

I am currently on the mini pill. We want another one, but we decided that giving my body a break for a bit would be a good idea. We have decided that we are going to start TTC in August, but I might talk to DH about stopping the pill sooner and save the $20 a month and do charting instead. Edited to say....And I don't know how true the whole being more fertile after BCP really is. It took me 13 months after coming off the pill (which I was on for 4 years) before I got KU, so I'm on the other end of the spectrum with that.

  • @cagoldi Have you tried the depo shot?  It completely stopped my period while I was on it.  I love it and would be back on it again but I thought it would be a little difficult to get to the OB every three months since that's an hour away from me.  It does take some time for your body to get back to normal when you stop, I've been on three times, first time it took 9 months to get my period back and the second and third time it took 4-6 months.

I've talked to my OB about it but she didn't think it was wise because I get complex migraines. Since the regular pill gives me headaches she felt it was likely I would also get them with Depo. But since it's an injection I can't just stop taking it like I would the pill and I'd be stuck with miserable side effects.

We discussed Lupron injections to help my Endo but since those can cause headaches also I have to steer clear.

    It's hard being a female.
  • I'm on the mini pill for now. And we're using condoms most of the time. My H doesn't want another baby, I could go either way, though I'd rather not be pregnant right now. He wants the extra protection.

I've heard that you are. It took us 18 cycles (and 2 mc's) to TTC DD1. I was pregnant with DD2 within 45 days of getting my Mirena removed. We figured it would take us another year, so I had my Mirena out earlier than we'd planned. We both obviously knew I could get pregnant but we didn't expect it to happen so quickly. So our 4 year age gap is now 3 years. Wouldn't change it for the world now!

  • I got pregnant with my current 5mo old while breadtfeeding my 8mo old son and pull out method so this time around condoms it is until I wean and go on birth control bc 2 under 2 is hard enough and I do not want anymore surprises. Also I was definitely way more fertile after my first was born maybe thats why happened so fast
