Rhogam Shot anyone?

I am a negative blood type and my husband is positive, resulting in me having to get a Rhogam shot. Anyone else in the same boat? Supposed to get it at 28 weeks. My doctor never specified and I went to go get it yesterday and the perso at the lab stopped me bc I am only 26 weeks. So annoyed.

Re: Rhogam Shot anyone?

  • Yep have to get one also next week (28 weeks) it's not a big deal though.

  • If they will be administering the shot in your doc's office at 28 weeks, you will need to pick it up from the lab that same day.  It does not "keep" for two weeks, which is likely why they stopped you.
  • I had mine just before 27 weeks. It was quick and didn't hurt at all. It is a shot in the butt though.

  • I got mine at 27 weeks, too.  I was given the labs for it around 25 weeks and she said to get it before my next appointment, which is Thursday.

  • Yep, me too! In between my glucose testing- sounds like Saturday morning is going to be fun  :\"> (But I reallllly wanted to sleep in instead!)
  • Yep, it's really no big deal. They do it in the butt because the needle is a bit longer than anything you would want going into your arm, but it's pretty quick and not all that painful. Of course, it usually is nice if your OB would specify what you need to do...
I actually had to remind my OB at my last appointment that she had told me I was going to get my rhogam shot at that appointment. She said to me "alright, the only other thing we need to do is give you your tdap shot." and I was like, uhh.... the whole reason you rescheduled this appointment to 28 weeks was for the rhogam shot, right? And apparently they don't like giving both shots in one appointment for some reason, so I guess I'm getting tdap next appointment.

  • I've already had two due to bleeding and will get another before delivery. No big deal. Made my butt muscle/hip a little sore for a day or so afterwards but nothing unbearable!
  • Yes I get mine next week. They give it at 28 weeks to make sure it lasts through delivery, as it lasts about twelve weeks. I had blood drawn last week to test for antibodies first. Had one with my other two pregnancies. No biggie. Good luck!
  • Yep. Mine is next week. Like others have said they are no big deal!
  • I'm getting mine tomorrow. Love all the solidarity of negative blood types. We are a rare bunch. :)
  • I know one is ordered for me, and on it's way. Ugh. Makes me feel like I'm a vampire or something...

  • I had one last week, kinda stings a bit but not a big deal.

  • Thanks ladies! Makes me feel a little more normal knowing there is so many other women dealing with this. I was mainly annoyed at the fact there wasn't clear communication from my doctor as to when I needed it done. Thanks for the heads up about the shot being administered into the butt! Definitely didn't know that!
  • I always got mine in my arm. I had one at 14 weeks after my CVS, and one at 8 weeks b/c of spotting. It felt like a flu shot to me.

  • I have mine at my 27 week appt, I have to have it with my son as well.  It's an intramuscular injection so it can be given in the arm, I opted to have mine there just because that's where my OB did it the last time and it didn't bother me.
  • I got stuck three times with my first pregnancy because of bleeding, the 28 week mark, and then after birth because my daughter had a positive blood type. Twice so far this pregnancy because of bleeding and then the 28 week mark. I guess we'll see if I get to have it again after birth! 28 weeks is significant because the shot is effective within your system for about 12 weeks so this way you are prepared for preterm and regular labor that may result in bloods getting mixed between you and your baby. If your baby has a positive blood type then you'll get another shot within 72 hours after birth to prevent the antibodies being created in your system that could complicate future pregnancies. I've had it both in my arms and upper butt/hip area.

Getting mine at 28 weeks next week after my blood draw tomorrow to check for antibodies. Had it done at 6 weeks and my blood work at 8 weeks came back positive for antibodies so she wants to check and make sure it was indeed the shot that caused that positive outcome (which it was because my blood work at the hospital at 6 weeks came back negative for antibodies lol) I get them in the butt. I am also getting my Tdap shot in the same visit.
  • I'll be getting mine this afternoon - this will be round number 3 for me with this pregnancy. It's really no big deal - the nurse said you can do it in your butt or your arm, i've always done my butt i think it hurts less :)

MrsHanley  just make sure once you deliver you get the follow up shot if the baby has a positive blood type.

Ready or not here we go !

  • I had one at 12 weeks for bleeding, and will get one at 28 weeks. Anyone know if getting it a little late is a danger? I was thinking about changing my 28 week appointment to 29 weeks, and plan to ask if there are any worries in doing so.

I'm getting one at my next appointment and I'll be one day shy of 28 weeks.  I had one after my m/c in 2011 and it was in my butt however I was so doped up from the anesthesia I hardly remember it.  For some reason, I thought you got one and were done and never had to get another.  Thanks for the info on this!  I would have felt stupid telling the MD I've already had one!

**EDIT** I just looked at my ticker - holy crap I'll be one day shy of 29 weeks instead of 28!  WHERE IS THE TIME GOING!!!!!

    :-/

  • Same boat here. I get mine next week at 28 weeks. They tested my blood for antibodies yesterday. I do recall getting it in my arm years ago when I had my other two children, who were both positive so I got it again after birth. It isn't too bad, price for bring so awesome and unique :)

  • I had one in August with a m/c. They did it in my arm, don't remember anything else.

My ob said at my next appointment (28 weeks) I'll schedule my appointment from the shot, probably at the hospital (which is a pain)

  • I had it last week at 28w, in my arm by my OB herself. She makes a trip once every week or two to pick it up from the lab and keeps it in office. NDB
