Getting out of the house?

DS is 3.5 weeks and for the last week I've been trying to get out of the house at least once a day. I meet someone for lunch or coffee or just run to the grocery, lactation group, or dr. DH thinks unless it's dr or lactation I shouldn't take LO out.

The pedi said to be cautious of germs but I always wear LO in the Moby or keep him in the car seat w a blanket over it. Weather isn't an issue since we are in San Diego.

What are you guys doing? Is DH overreacting or am being careless?

If I'm stuck at home, I go nuts!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

I've been taking LO out since about 4w He's 7w tomorrow. I just wear him in my wrap or keep him in a car seat covered. We typically go to the grocery store, Target, and DS1's swimming, music, and gymnastics classes. Running some errands and just getting out of the house keeps me sane. I think what your doing is perfectly fine.

  • My pedi said a walk around the block or something like that was just fine. He just cautioned us against not socializing the baby with people which means things like, they come too close to the baby, touch the baby, hold the baby or babies things etc. Just taking the baby out was not a concern for him. As long as that is managed I think I would be fine.

I must tell you though I was mildly paranoid about anyone meeting the baby before a month at least and even posted about it here asking when people had visitors so I am one of the more conservative ones. Now that he is 6 weekish I feel comfortable taking him to a public place. At 3.5 weeks I would have taken him out for a walk in his stroller but that's it. Which is sort of what your suggesting in terms of the moby and car seat I suppose.
  • I say to each his own. As long as you are being careful I dont see a problem with it. I personally am in the opposite situation. Husband always tells me to get out more but Im too afraid. Im nervous about LO screaming or being fussy while we are out. You are braver then I

  • I took my LO out starting at 2 weeks old.  My pedi said it was fine.
  • Yes, your DH is overreacting. I can't imagine not going out everyday, especially in a warm climate.

  • Our pedi told us to just be cautious when going out, but definitely didn't tell us not to take her out. DS is in preschool, so she goes to his school with me two days a week for drop off and pick up. We also go out often to Target or other stores, just general running errands, and church on Sundays. I pretty much always have her in the Moby when we are out. Enjoy your time out of the house, I say!

  • We've been out pretty much every day to multiple places since we came home from the hospital. We just keep her covered when we're in stores. So clearly I think your h is overreacting.

  • On days when it is warm enough, I've taken LO for walks around the neighborhood quite a few times, but haven't taken him out in public at all.  I'm in the minority, but from the start DH and I talked about and figured that we were most comfortable waiting until LO had his 2 month shots before taking him out. That said - I am totally getting stir crazy, and SO glad that he gets his shots next week; while I was too paranoid to take him out earlier, I'm very much ready for this hibernation period to be over!

Bottom line - I agree with the "to each his/her own" comments.  I'd recommend talking to your DH about it and seeing if you can come up with a compromise that will allow you to get out of the house that he feels comfortable with. GL!

  • I fly out of this house when I can! I've already been to work twice just to visit and mingle with my co workers. We've been to the market, Target, over friends and family's houses, birthday parties, restaurants... Just everywhere. After about two weeks I was bored in the house. When I drove my truck for the first time two weeks PP it was like the happiest moment of my life! I only went to drop DD1 off at school but the cabin fever was real!!

  • Thanks ladies! I just told DH about the responses and he was surprisingly positive.

He knows I do whatever I'm gonna do but I want to take his parental opinions into consideration, ya know. But he is the biggest worry wart on the planet!
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • I'm the same way as you. We took LO as early as 1 wk and he's been fine.
  • I've been going on walks and to my Mommy's group, but other than that my pedi said it was wise to stay home until we start the vaccinations. Mostly because of the recent outbreak of measles in the Bay Area.
  • I have a 4 year old as well. We can't avoid places with lots of kids and crowds. Ds 2 will be 7 weeks old tomorrow and has been to inside playgrounds, stores, children's museums, nursery at church, and retaurants. We are diligent about hand washing and sanitizer. So far, no sickness for either child.

  • I'm out almost everyday. I have 2 other kids which means school events, ballet, gymnastics, etc. I also have things that need to get done.
If I don't shower, get dressed, and leave the house daily/EOD, I start to feel sad and withdrawn. Esp with DH traveling like he has been for work.
    I need to get out.

  • LO is 3.5 weeks and has been out if not everyday, every other day.  Either to the grocery store, Target, school drop off/pick-up or to friends homes (who are not ill).  ;) But, since she is #3 she is out way more than my oldest/middle ever were at this age.  Personally, I would go nuts staying in that much especially in the nice weather!  But as FTPs, I can understand why you would be hesitant to go out much.  With my oldest, I only took her to the store with me occasionally if my husband wasn't around.

  • I think you should definitely be getting out. I try to do something everyday, even if its just the grocery store.
  • I take LO out every single day. I think the last time he was home all day was probably over a month ago, not exaggerating. We run errands, go to restaurants, the mall, friend's houses. I don't let strangers touch him and he is usually in his car seat the whole time (unless we are at a friend's house). We are usually out from 11-1 every day.

I am a teacher and won't bring him into work until 2 month shots (which was today). So, I don't think I'm completely careless but I'm not going to keep him inside forever!

@Rach521‌, we're just west of the city and only got rain, fortunately. But it was once again fuh-keeng coooold, too cold for even a little walk in the stroller. Ugh!!! If I remember correctly you're way south in Burlington county, right? That sucks that you got more snow! Enough already, Mother Nature, you evil bitch!!!!
@bribbon I just saw this! yup, we're down in Burlington county. I heard there was a chance for a "snow of the season" for us but now they're saying it's going offshore. go away storm, go away.

  • My guy is 6 weeks today and he just went on his first non-doctor outing yesterday. We went to BRU, grocery shopping, and the farmers' market. I wore him everywhere and bathed him when we got home. DH is a total germ freak and didn't want me to take him out yesterday. I was going nuts though and had to get out. In DH's defense he is an ER dr and sees some really sick kids on a regular basis and worries about our guy.
