Babies with colds

I tried to search this but couldnt find a good answer. I need your best hints for dealing with a super crabby baby with a cold. She is sniffly, coughy, dont you dare put me down mess.... Help please

Re: Babies with colds

  • Cuddle her. She doesn't feel good and wants comforted. You can also try a warm mist humidifier, baby Vicks on her feet with socks, or saline in her nose and than suck it out with a bulb or the nose Frida.

I've been told a cool mist humidifier works just as well...

    Saline and suction.

also, she might not want to eat as much, but keep her hydrated...smaller feedings more frequently
Watch for wheezing or retractions or signs of respiratory distress.

ETA: I'm probably being overly cautious with my advice, but I don't want any other mommas to go through what I did...

  • We brought our little guy in on Sunday.  They suggested having him in the bathroom with the shower running.  Otherwise, things mentioned above.  Keep an eye out though, the doctor mentioned RSV is going around like crazy!

  • Cool mist humidifier with a few drops of peppermint oil, Nose Frida, saline drops, get the bathroom really steamy before LO's shower or bath like PPs stated.

There were a couple nights when DS was so congested he could not lie down comfortably. He could breathe much better upright. I put him in his carseat and sat him right under the humidifier. I slept next to him and held his hand the whole time to make sure he was safe and not coughing too much. That's the only way the poor kid could get any rest.

What Katie said. My LO also developed bronchialitis (though not to the extent of hers) and basically the doctor said it was good I brought him in when I did, because if I had waited it probably would resulted in hospitalization. Let me tell you, breathing treatments are pretty sad!

Just make sure you don't hear any wheezing or see any blue near the mouth/lips or fingertips. Everyone has great tips!

  • What everyone else said.... humidifier, saline and suction, steamy shower, and cuddles.  I had him sleeping in his RnP so he could be at an incline as well!

  • I am fortunate enough to have a wonderful Pediatrition that responds to emails pretty regularly so when I emailed her about my daughters cold, she responded with this:

So with the cold, a little bit of a runny nose and cough is ok, but with her being so little don't hesitate bringing her in to let us look at her even if just for reassurance. It sounds like she is fine right now and it is normal for colds to last 5-10 days, but it's usually good to have us take a look and make sure nothing else is going on.

Reasons to bring her in that make us think there is something more going on than a cold: fever, fussiness more than usual, not eating well, not sleeping well, coughing a lot, any increase in her work of breathing (breathing faster than normal, tugging at her stomach muscles so hard that you can see her ribs). We worry about ear infections, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, (RSV- respiratory syncytial virus), to name a few.

The best things for a cold are saline in her nose (simply saline is great but I'm sure she won't like it), sucking out the snot with the sucker, steaming up with bathroom and bringing her in there-the steam helps, a humidifier in her room.

    I hope this helps!

  • Thanks for the tips everyone. I will have to try and see if these help

Currently in the hospital with my baby for the second time. First time was Norovirus. Now it's bronchiolitis from having rsv two weeks ago. Breathing treatments weren't helping. He's sooo much better today. So sad that he's teething right now too.
Advice: saline and suction, upright sleeping if you can safely (we use the rock n play), Tylenol for fever or extreme discomfort. Cuddle.
Hope you're sweetie is better soon.

    Edit for misspell
