XP Working Moms - Bottles for BF babies

Ok F14 moms - DD1 never had a problem going back and forth, but she was introduced to bottles early. DD2 is really struggling. I've tried to do at least a bottle a week since 3 weeks but the last three times we have tried it just hasn't worked at all. I know part of the problem is that I need to leave and let someone else do it, but I'm wondering what brands of bottles worked for you guys. So far we've tried Tommee Tippee (the only ones we've had a little success with), Avent, and the little Medela nipples with a Meldela bottles. Any advice is appreciated! TIA!

  • Try Playtex drop ins nurser with the brown rubber nipples (they are softer than the clear ones). And yes, you need to LEAVE. Baby can smell the milk. She ain't no dummy- why take a bottle when the ninny is RIGHT THERE?!

  • before I switched to formula, I pumped too and Dr. Browns by far worked the best for us. DD took right to them and had no problem switching back and forth. she also took the bottle from me so I never had to leave the room.

  • I also use Dr. Browns. Sometimes I'm in the room, sometimes not. Another helpful thing for us is using a burp cloth that "smells" like me. It seems to relax her and let her know it's feeding time.

DD had no issue with bottles, but DS just started refusing them. We've tried dr. Brown, Avent, Tomee Tipee, and Gerber. We've tried other people giving them while I'm out of the house, warm milk, just pumped milk, etc. I decided to take a break from getting him to take a bottle and focus on getting him to use a pacifier, since I think that will help him learn to suck on something other than me! Someone recommended Mam bottles to me so I plan to try them.

  • Another vote for the playtex drop ins with brown nipples.
And yes, you need to leave. If she can hear you or smell you, she could refuse bottle.
DD1 was my hardest with bottles and my mom used to wrap her in my bath robe to feed her. I also used up wear one of DHs tshirts and then he would wear that shirt when feeding.
  • Thanks ladies!!

We've been experimenting with different bottles. I had read several different recommendations for the Medela Calma nipple/bottle for breastfed babies.  I bought one yesterday and it really does mimic how breastfeeding works.  It is very odd looking, but basically rather than being an entire nipple milk passes through, it has a rubber nipple like cover that fits over a mechanism that simulates the way a human nipple dispenses milk. As the baby sucks milk only comes through one small hole.

  • We have tried avent and the medela calma. Since DH is giving the bottle, I'm leaving that decision to him. He likes the Avent the best. I also have a tommee tippee and a (freebie) similac, but I don't know if we will use them.

Are you giving her the bottle? That's how it sounded by the OP and that could be the problem, not the bottle.  I'd have someone else try before going out and buying a bunch of different bottles/nipples.

I sympathize with bottle issues. LO1 hated bottles, but in lieu of starving while I was at work he tolerated the Nuk nipples. Not sure if he really liked them or it was just the last one we tried and he realized it was bottle or starve.  He weaned himself off bottles at 10m and elected to just eat solids and nurse when I was around lol.

We are determined to have LO2 taking bottles more regularly before my leave is up to help that not happen again. We got lax about giving #1 bottles and he is a stubborn little boy, no idea where he gets THAT trait from.... ;;)

  • DS1 would only accept the Comotomo bottle. That's all we offered DS2 since we already had them on hand.
