Natural Birth

Opinions appreciated! Midwife bound

I have been lurking on this board for a while and have really enjoyed reading what everyone has to say and have a question to ask. After doing some research (I am a FTM) and starting our Bradley Classes my husband and I have decided that the hospital we had originally planned to deliver at does not meet our desires to have the most natural birth possible and are currently seeking out a midwife to finish the remainder if our prenatal care and delivery. I'm aware that it's a little late in the game at almost 26 weeks but not too late! I have several choices... A stand alone birth center that has one spot left for my delivery date, a hospital based midwifery practice or a highly recommended midwife who has her own private practice for home births. Of course there are pros/cons to each of these. Which would you chose and why? Please share your thoughts and experiences as hubby and I are trying to decide what is best! TIA.

  • I personally would go for the hospital based option. Because I fear the "what ifs" and if I'm in the best place to deal with any "what ifs" then I can relax and forget about them and focus on birthing my baby.

Also I live in a country where hospitals are very pro natural birth, and you basically just work with your midwife through the whole labour unless there is a problem.

  • I would check into hospital policies first - just because you have a midwife doesnt mean she will necessarily be natural birth friendly. Midwives in hospitals are generally at the mercy of the standard hospital procedures. See what the epidural and c section rate is for the hospital and that will tell you a lot about it. I am planning a home birth this June, but if there were a birth center close by I would probably choose that option.
  • Also, i would interview the care providers you are considering choosing, and pick one who you click best with. Also, hire a doula :)
  • We just hired a doula... We are going to wait and talk also with our Bradley instructor tomorrow night To see what she says about the options and what' she has seen/heard. I have a friend who is in midwifery school that said the hospital is ok but # 1 like you said they still may be bound by hospital regulations and policies plus they don't have any birth tubs there. Not sure how much I would use one but I I would like to have the option.

  •  I would go with the midwife at the hospital. My H and I tend to be worriers and I know that I would feel more relaxed and safe knowing that if something were to happen I am at the hospital already. At the hospital it really depends on the nurse you have and your provider with how flexible they are and how many polices you have to adhere to. My OB required a Heplock but I arrived in transition and told the nurse no. She let it go and I was never pushed to get one again. My nurse also let me start to push in the tub even though hospital policy does not allow water births.

  • I did a free standing birth center birth and loved it. I've been debating on going back for #2 or doing a home birth. The less time in the car the better. Plusalso I'm terrified of hospitals so that's a big factor in my choice.

  • I am not a worrier and I live close to a hospital, so I will be doing a home birth this time. We did a birth center last time and while that was nice, the whole transportation thing was way unpleasant. Riding in the car while having contraction sucks and putting a newborn in a car seat also sucks. If you have the space and a bathtub you might like home birth.
