nbr-job hunting

edited March 2014 in July 2014 Moms
Tis the season to start teacher job hunting and I've applied for what's available. That said, it's been 5 years since I've graduated with my BA and I just started my masters program to re-validate my teaching certificate since I was not able to secure a teaching job in that time. So if you could spare any thoughts and prayers that *THIS* will finally be my year...and I won't be discriminated against for being mega pregnant (even though that doesn't happen ::eye roll::), it'd greatly appreciate it!

The only teaching jobs I could get we're through family connections. Luckily my dad works in administration. Have you managed to get to know any principals or teachers who can put in a personal recommendation for you?

Finally... this school year I actually got into a public school district as an assistant. In the past,I always knew someone who knew someone who knew someone. Hopefully, this will help.

  • The nepotism in school districts is disgusting to me. I graduated in 2008 and have yet to land a FT regular teacher's elementary position. There's also very very few jobs in this field available in SWPA. I went to a job fair in NC 5 years ago and walked away with 7 offers after 3 hours of interviews!

Good luck. I know how stressful it is. After spending 6 years in education I've realized I made a mistake and wish I had chosen a different field. I may take classes for something else while staying home with LO so it at least expands my options when I reenter the job force in a few years.

  • Good Luck!!!

I totally feel your pain. I graduated in 2006 and spent 3 years substitute teaching with little prospects of a FT position. I finally changed careers because I was tired of not having a steady salary and not knowing what I was doing the next day when I went to bed.

  • Good luck! I am sure it is not fun searching so you have my good thoughts 100%!
And for those of y'all looking for teaching jobs, move to Texas... Haha! (I don't mean that as real advice... I don't expect you to pick up and move)! But, my area has lots of schools opening here bc our districts are getting overcrowded. I am completing my 7th year as a high school English teacher. I'm certified to be a Librarian which is the job I really want and can't find! I keep calling around and most districts say that more jobs (especially for new schools) will be posted throughout April. Maybe you will find even more opportunities then!
  • Good luck! I'm originally from NW PA and went to college there and I still remember all the trouble my education major friends had finding teaching jobs in the area.

  • Good luck! I'm right there with ya, though not for a teaching role. There's only so much sucking in I can do at this point, so I'm hoping to find something soon ---- and that you do too!
