There is a year long wait at my daycare. Thankfully we are given priority since my DS is already there. In any case, they made me fill out a form to reserve my spot. No deposit till we get closer.
I would go sooner than later.
I think the answer will really depend on when you will be needing to put your LO into childcare. From the vague information though, I would recommend sooner rather than later. Almost all of the decent daycares/child care providers around us have some kind of waiting lists. Others will take "newborns" where some won't take babies before 3 or 6 months.
For this first school year we have someone coming into the house every day. Starting fall 2015 we will use day care, and I'll begin looking around this summer in case of 1 year wait lists.
We started looking at centers when I was about eight weeks knowing it would be a year before we would need it. We would prefer family day care, but we've heard those don't have wait lists as long. We are on a wait list at a center just as backup.
I'd go sooner than later. We had our deposit in with our first about 7 months early. I was glad that we had it set prior to DD arriving.... I was much more rational then than I would have been once she was here and I had to picture leaving her.
For DS, I started getting my name on waiting lists before the pee stick had dried. So happy that this LO is pretty much guaranteed a spot at our daycare since siblings have priority.
Two of the daycares we spoke with at 8 weeks already had a 7-deep waiting list. The one we ended up choosing, they had just opened their list for January of next year, and we were 4th on the list.
With my twins, we did not get in to the daycare until 18 months of being on the wait list. Granted, partly because there were two of them. Had I only had one, we would have been waiting 9 months.
