XP: Fluoride?

DD (2 yrs old) is going in for her first dental check up next week and they asked if we would like her to get a fluoride treatment. I said I wasn't sure yet, that I would look into it. I've found arguments for both sides. I normally buy fluoride-free toothpaste for DH and I, but I think it's different for children (DD doesn't yet brush with toothpaste). What do/would you do? Do you have any good resources that helped in your decision? TIA!

Re: XP: Fluoride?

  • As a dentist I can tell you that the fluoride they administer for that age is usually a varnish, 1 time application that stays on the teeth for a couple of hours. It's very safe, no systemic issues as a 1 time application and is very safe. We like to place fluoride on teeth right after a cleaning bc the surfaces are as clean as they are ever going to get and the teeth will have the most optimal absorption. IMO ( I am aware of the fluoride haters out there) a periodic application like that is safe and effective. But of course, use your best judgment and go with your gut feeling. Now regular toothpaste for the kids you don't want fluoride in it due how much of it they try to eat/swallow (which CAN have systemic effects if they ingest enough of it). I can't tell you how many anti fluoride people I see that have a crazy amount of cavities that would greatly benefit from being remineralized with fluoride but yet they would rather just let all the teeth decay into pieces. Take that for what you will, that's my two cents. Everyone is different. Hope that helps.

  • In the city yes but the tap tastes plain nasty. My patients relate not drinking it very much.

  • As someone who has had a recent amount of dental work I would do the fluoride especially after what jmknox said. If it is to seal/protect the teeth and done infrequently then it should be safe and effective. IMO having LO deal with dental work would be more tramatizing for both of us, so if I can prevent it I will.
