Breastfeeding

arg my milk supply is almost gone!

I was really sick for 2 days, like bed ridden sick, and it was almost a full 48 hours between pumpings.  I pumped last night and got almost 8 oz between them, but today I feel like I have no milk. I was engorged before I pumped last night, but today my breasts feel soft like there's nothing there! I don't wanna stop breastfeeding, cause it's the best stuff for him, as you are all aware! I'm assuming that I just need to pump constantly.  little man has issues latching, so he doesn't get on the breast too much because of it.  He won't latch right, but we are seeing a doctor to see if we can do something about it. My nipples were bleeding and raw from his improper latch, so for now, I pump and bottle feed. He is supplemented currently, but we may EBF in the near future.  Hopefully I can get my milk back up! :/

Re: arg my milk supply is almost gone!

  • I was so very sick. I had the flu 104 degree fever) followed by a pneumonia (and an ER visit). Dh had to care for DS (7 months old) for over three weeks.

When DS was home, I set my alarm durring the day for every two hours and I would wake up every two hours and bf him. Overnight I would wake when DS did and bf him. When DS was at daycare, I set my alarm for every two hours, got up, pumped for 30 min and went back to bed.

My supply went down while I was sick, but now it is back.

It was a lot of work, it was hard when I was so sick, but it was worth it.

Kelly mom is a great site with lots of information on how to increase your supply.

Nurse nurse nurse, pump pump pump, lots of food and water.

  • I'm sorry you were so sick. How old is your LO? While it's definitely not good to go 48 hours without pumping, you might be ok. Soft breasts don't mean no milk. Pump every 2 hours during the day, every 3 at night and drink a ton of water. Have you considered seeing an LC for his latch?

  • Agree with PPs, it's not easy but you can build your supply back up. You can also do power pumping when you get time - pump 20 mins, rest 10, pump 10, rest 10, pump 10. Do that for a few days in a row (once per day) in addition to the pumping schedule suggested. Skin to skin time will help also.

I have a little guy with crappy latch too, we were never able to correct it despite seeing LCs and other specialists, but definitely consider seeing an LC and also have him evaluated for tongue and/or lip ties. Those can be corrected now via laser (10 min procedure, local anesthesia only) and that has made a big difference for some folks. It might also just be something that improves as he grows and develops so keep putting him on there to try every now and then!

EPing is a big pain, BF is MUCH easier so keep working at it!

  • In addition to all of the good advice here, I wanted to add, even though it's the last thing you want to do, nursing through your illness not only protects your supply, but also protects your baby by giving them antibodies to the illness you have.
