High-Risk Pregnancy

XP from preemies: Progesterone?

Hi all.  I am 12 weeks so I'm not really high risk yet, but I will be.  I am going to be starting progesterone to prevent another preemie after my water broke unexpectedly at 32 weeks.  I have seen discussions of this before and generally everyone says there are no symptoms.  I have HG and feel so sick (and throw up a lot) during pregnancy.  It tends to get better for me right about the time I am going to be starting the injections.  If this makes me sick, I don't think I can take it.  My baby has been neglected for weeks, the house is falling apart, and I have to have some good weeks before we get another baby.  I seriously doubt that if progesterone in my body is so high that it's responsible for my sickness that I need more, but I think usually estrogen is blamed for sickness rather than progesterone.  Can anyone tell me if they saw any morning sickness type symptoms when they started this?  Also, I am going to be teaching for 12 hours straight the day after the injection.  Does anyone see any problem with this?  Thanks!

  • I didn't start my weekly progesterone shots until I was 20 weeks to help deter preterm labor. I've had no big side effects besides itchiness or burning where I had my injection. I am more emotional, which I guess could be pregnancy hormones along with the hormone shot.

Hasn't made me sick or anything yet and I've had 5-6 shots so far.

  • I started my 17p shots at 16 weeks. The first 2 or maybe 3 shots made me really tired/sleepy the night of and the next day I felt like I had a terrible flu. I was totally useless. I called my ob nurse and she and my doc said that its unusual to have such a dramatic reaction but not impossible. They told me to hydrate really well and rest. It only lasted about 24 hours from the time of the shot, and around the 24 hr mark I started feeling better. I have 9 shots left now and I second what PP said about the itching and burning. I never really had that until later in the cycle. Good luck. :))
  • That is bad news for me!  I think I am super sensitive to hormones or something.  I can't even take birth control.  Boo.  Did you have it every time, or just the first time?  Itching and burning does not sound like a picnic either...
  • I had terrible HG until 16-17 weeks. I was puking constantly despite round the clock Zofran. I started 17P (Makena) at 17 weeks and didn't notice any change in my nausea/vomiting. All I had was local symptoms (itching, something burning, sometimes a hard lump) at the vaccine site. Everyone's different, so you'll just have to see how it goes. It's been so worth it though, I had my son at 29 weeks and now am 34. I truly think the 17P is what has made the difference!

  • I had the progesterone shots from about 16w-36w.  I only had very mild itching and an occasional lump around the injection site.  I would always wake up a little extra thirsty the next day too.  But that was really it - no nausea or any other symptoms like that.  I had bad morning sickness in first tri, but it pretty much went away by second tri even when I was getting the shots.  Good luck!

  • I have been on 17P shots sine 16 weeks and only have one left for week 36 (yay). The only real side effects that I have noticed at all are as others have mention, soreness, burning, a little swelling and or itchiness at the injection sight. I have not had any issues with it making me feel ill at all. I did have quite a bit of continuous nausea in the first tri and that did not return with the shots.

Things that have helped have been getting the injection in the higher outside part of my butt cheek, having the injection go in very slowly, then having the area firmly rubbed/massaged a little right after to help spread the 17P out a bit. Also for me it is easier to stand, point my toes in a bit and bed over a little while they give the shot as well as take Benadryl that day and the day after to help with the swelling and itchiness (my doctor recommended this) . To me it is a very small price to pay to keep my baby inside as long as possible and closer to full term!
  • @brachysira‌, I had that reaction full on twice, the third less severe and then not so bad after. Im on number 12 now and its mostly just like everyone else. Burning, itching. And i second the higher location and benedryl. Also, no matter what dont let anyone inject you in the round part of your butt cheek! That hurts and burns so SO much worse. Good luck and congrats on your baby
