abdominal workouts?

I am finally getting my energy back and am going to begin working out again tonight! I've looked on pinterest and Google for some pregnancy ab workouts, but I'm just curious if any of you have found some that have worked for you. I am 13 weeks, so I am trying to avoid exercise that involves me laying on my back. Thanks!!

Re: abdominal workouts?

  • I'm doing Lindsay Brin's workout DVD and I absolutely love it!  She has cardio/toning workouts that include core work and abs.  Each trimester DVD also includes yoga.  It's a great full-body workout!

If you don't want to purchase, Youtube has some good ones: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pregnancy ab workout&sm=3

    Hope this helps!

  • I know you're not supposed to do ab work after a certain point lying on your back due to the possibility of 'limiting oxygen' to the child (i've read a lot of different opinions on this). Does anyone know why doing ab exercise on back would limit oxygen but just lying on your back, lets say to sleep, is any different?

I'm pretty sure the no laying on your back stuff is when you get bigger. Something about the extra weight, maybe the organs slightly moved around, etc, pinching nerves or vessels or something?? Sorry I don't remember the exact explanation. But when I was pregnant with #1, I definitely knew when I got to the point where I couldn't sleep on my back. If I accidentally rolled onto my back in the middle of the night, within minutes I would wake up in pain and with tingling numb legs. I think this early, laying on your back is fine, whether it is for sleep or otherwise.

Eta: Oh, and I've always heard abs are fine until they become uncomfortable.

  • Re: the lying on the back thing, last pregnancy my OB told me you can basically lie on your back as long as it's comfortable.  And once you hit the point when you shouldn't be doing it, you'll know.

  • asking your OB is probably best.

  • Lie on an exercise ball for crunches so you have the support for your back, and do plank.

I believe ab workouts can be a no-no less because of laying on your back, and more because your ab muscles separate during pregnancy to allow space for your growing uterus, and this causes a MUCH higher chance of muscle tearing during excersize.

Talk to your OB. Don't over do it. I know at 16 weeks, when I stretch my hands over my head, I feel it pull in my ab muscles. That's enough of a reminder to me to not go out and do 50 crunches...

  • Planks are great for pregnancy. Check out core exercises for pregnancy rather than ab workouts. If you can keep your core strong it will help with getting your abs back after delivery.
  • Thanks ladies! Very helpful! I will ask my midwife at our 16 week checkup to be sure. She told me to walk a mile a day, 40 pelvic rocks 3 times and day and 3 minute squats throughout the day. I've been following that, just curious about any other exercises people have been doing!
  • Why does it matter what anyone else here is doing if your doctor has already told you what is okay for you?

  • 3 minute squats?!? like, you hold the same squat for 3 minutes? i am fit but i could not do this, much less when you got extra weight around that belly. ha, i could prob hold a wall sit for maybe a minute. very impressive!
