Cloth Diapering

Should I buy these BG 4.0??

A friend of a friend just contacted me because she knows I'm planning on cloth diapering. She apparently purchased a ton of white bumgenius 4.0 that are mostly new in the package. She said she'd sell them to me for $15.50 each. Just browsing online this seems like a great price for still being in the package. The problem is, she's a friend of a friend... So it's not like a store where if I try a few and it's an epic fail I can return them....

Thoughts??

If my CD plan fails, would I be able to sell the unopened ones easily to get my money back?

Eta... They're all white and are snaps

  • Are BG 4.0s diapers that you were planning to get anyway? Do you still need more for your stash? Do you want white, or would you prefer colors and/or patterns? Can you see them before you buy?

Maybe she would be willing to sell you a couple rather than all of them?

You should be able to sell the unopened ones fairly easily (they might take a bit longer, though, being white).

I actually don't mind the white.  This is our first child so it's the most gender neutral I guess for if we're able to use them for the second.  DH and I have been researching BG 4.0 for the longest time and, assuming they work well with LO (not born yet... due date was this past Sunday... yikes!) then we'll stick to those.  She sent me a pic, they're still in their original package.

I haven't even started my stash yet... I was planning on using disposables until LO appeared to be the size where the cloth would fit and then buy some.  I just can't pass up a good deal.

She's offering them to me first but she has other people who want them so if I only buy a few the rest may be gone when I want more (not sure if she's telling me the truth or not... maybe just trying to get rid of them).  I would just hate to commit to a lot without knowing if they'll work... although I suppose that goes with any cloth diaper you buy... She's selling up to 28 new in package & 8 opened/barely used.

It's not a bad price - you could probably make it back if you try one and still keep the others new in the package. There's a lot of demand for BG. Selling involves paypal fees, shipping fees, buying the packaging, etc (unless you find someone local to sell to) so there's stuff involved with that.

To be honest, I'd much rather pick out the ones I like than have all white, but if you're happy with white, there's nothing wrong with that!

  • Personally, I like have a varied stash. The most I have of any one brand is 6, and those are daycare diapers, so I tried to keep it super simple.

That being said, if it were me, I'd buy maybe 3 or 4, but I wouldn't get the whole set.

They are a good price, but not a great one if they don't work out and you have to sell them. If you can't sell them locally you might have to lower the price so that they are still a good deal with shipping. Since there are other people interested you shouldn't feel bad buying a few but not all of them. There will also be some decent sales coming up soon.
  • While the normal retail price is $17.95 if you look around and aren't in too much of a hurry you can find some better sales on new BG 4.0's from cloth diaper websites, for example Cottonbabies currently has the discontinued colors 3 for $45 with free shipping on them.  (And if you end up buying $75+ on their site you can get a free 4.0 in Ribbit H&L)

This past Black Friday sale I was able to find the Albert print (which is often more than the solids) for $14.55, and was able to find a limit selection of colors for $10.07 each.

  • I'd pass. You can get BG 4.0s for under retail and still have them come with a warranty. As PPs mentioned, 4.0s are currently 3 for $45 in discontinued colors plus there is a promo for a free ribbit 4.0 with a $75 purchase. So you could get 7 diapers direct from the manufacturer for $90 which works out to less than $13 each.

  • I'd get one, maybe two if you are itching to start your stash. Down the road you may realize you like other brands better, or even some fun colors.

  • I haven't paid more than $15 for any of my 4.0s, new, and I got the colors I wanted. I would maybe buy one or two to have white, but that's it.

  • Do you have a Buy, Buy, Baby nearby? I'm slowly adding to my stash of 4.0's with their 5 dollars off coupons. It ends up being 13.00 per dipe.

I wish!  The closest one is an hour away... the coupon would be useless after the gas spent going there lol.
  • Just wanted to mention that white diapers get dried on accident in my house quite often. They blend in with my inserts and I don't notice them. Some people always dry their diapers, but they won't last as long. I actually lost one of my white Lil Joey's. It was so tiny and I didn't see it hiding in my white fitted sheet! Just my two cents. :)

  • I'd probably pass. I'm not sure that BG would honor the 1 year warranty on new diapers purchased from an individual rather than an "authorized dealer". The price is pretty good but you should be able to find them at a similar cost from a CD store and still have the benefit of the warranty. I'm not opposed to buying diapers second hand, but if I'm going to shell out money for new diapers I want the warranty that goes with them.
