BLW aside, at what age do you think your LO will be done with purées? Btdt moms, what's your experience been? How much does it depend on how any teeth they have? What else lets you know they're ready to be done?
I've still been doing purées first and finger foods after. It makes me feel better knowing he's getting enough nutrients. But he's getting really good at finger feeding lately and prefers it. When I can give him more of a variety of things and he starts chewing and gagging less I will eliminate purées.
Edited to add I'm not sure exactly but I think around a year he will be off purées he already has 6 teeth.
I've been wondering this also. I only buy/make a couple of purees now (prunes and pears mainly and some veggies) and do more finger foods. I figure by next month the only purée will be prunes, FWIW she only has 2 teeth but I haven't found anything she cants eat.
He could probably give up purees right now and be fine, he only has a couple of teeth but that hasn't really stopped him from being able to eat anything. I like mixing them with his yogurt though and they're easy on the road so I'll keep having some around. Plus those Plum pouches honestly contain more variety than what I tend to give him finger food wise so I like that he's tried so many things.
You'll know. My LO started grabbing for the spoon and making a big mess. It was a total PITA. The whole time she'd be eyeing my food and trying to grab it. So, I just started giving her some of my food. Now dinner time (and other meal times) are AWESOME! It is so much better to have her ear with us than trying to mess with the purées. It does take more planning, but is NBD once you get the hang of it.
I think once we finish the drawer full we have of purées we will be done with them. We did a sort of BLW mix, so we started out with finger foods and purées. She's at the point where almost any food can be smushed/cut up/etc into a form she can handle. I realized this when we had stir fry the other night and I gave her a baby replica of our meal and she loved it. And the other week we went to a Greek restaurant and she ate broccoli, rice, chicken, and potatoes off of my plate.
At this point we will use the purées when it's most convenient until they are gone. We have a long car trip coming up and they will make it so much easier to make sure she gets healthy food while we eat fast food!
Lily decided on her own, basically. She just stopped eating all purees, but would eat anything else. So, we decided to just have her eat what we do and not worry about fighting her anymore.
I'm just a first time mom, so this is just based on my experiences with my LO and what I have read. For my LO, I can't imagine him being done with purees anytime soon. He refuses most finger foods, but we keep trying. I'm not anticipating him being off purees for at least a couple of months. I don't think teeth have anything to do with it because babies don't typically have their molars at this point, and those are the chewing teeth. They use their gums for most finger foods.
+1 to what @42butterflies said...your LO will make it clear
FWIW, I think if you move to feeding milk/formula at meal times it will make you more comfortable abandoning purees because they will be getting nutrition there. I think with Bradley, around 11 months he was only getting a drink at mealtimes (and the middle of the night because he hated me).
I am a FTM and just go based on of LO reaction to things. I have been fork mashing for a while now. Mostly purees are chunkier foods that are harder to mash. I have noticed that if its super pureed he does eat a LOT more food. I still do the pouches when we are in public. He ate strawberries the other day that I just cut in small pieces, loves chunks of bananas, pears that are almost too ripe are great when cut up, over done carrots for mashed. He's seeming to really enjoy finger foods. (he is a foodie like his momma though)
We'll be using them for awhile. LO is just not getting the hang of finger foods. We keep trying, but he gags and throws up on almost everything that's not a purée. We tried carrots and potatoes from the pot roast I made tonight. Big fail. I'm ready for him to be able to eat what we're eating though.

Fwiw, she still has no teeth.
